How to join the 📢 Raise Your Voice Thread:

  • Introduce yourself in the comment section of this story and tell us what you create on Vocal.
  • Shoutout a Vocal creator you recommend reading. Include the URL of a writer or story that inspired you and why.
  • If you like a story another person has recommended, send that story's creator a like, leave a comment, and/or subscribe to them.

Please follow Vocal’s Community Guidelines and don’t spam your own profile or stories in the thread. We encourage the community to report users or comments that break these guidelines.

Also, make sure you join our Vocal Community Chat every other Tuesday at 12PM ET to discuss insights and platform updates.

We'll start the thread:

Lamar Wiggins' villanelle, "Provisional Equality" has a consistent rhyme and cyclical nature that resonates with life's rhythms, intertwining harmony in both content and form. We were impressed by his adoption of this style of poetry and found it quite impactful, driving home the powerful theme of the pursuit and right to equality.

Now it's your turn. Share your favorite stories in the comments below.

This week I'd like to nominate my friend Scott Christensen, who's become a close correspondent over on Vocal's Discord channel. Scott and I have a place in common, which is China, where he is now and I was for ten years. Many of you will have recently read his well-deserved Top Story "Tales of a 90s Stripper," which dealt with the subject of AI, but the one I'd like to call your attention to is the following piece on that faraway land Scott and I have both called home. If you've been, I guarantee every sentence will bring back memories, and if you've not, I can't think of a better introduction! https://vocal.media/wander/cashless-for-24-hours-in-shenzhen-china

Hi, I write fiction and poetry, and I think I'm finding my voice thanks to Vocal. Teresa Renton is a wonderful author who weaves together language as if she's just breathing it out. Reading her work can be an ethereal experience - she's so very good. One of her pieces I really enjoyed is: https://vocal.media/poets/petrichor-8egy0u5g

  • Hi I am Mike and I help Admin the Vocal Social Society, as usual I am late to this but hope someone will see my five excellent stories that I have enjoyed and are maybe deserving of a Top Story. So here we go 1: This excellent VSS Challenge entry from Rachel Deeming https://vocal.media/fiction/dolly-and-the-doll 2: I love this magical story by Brin J https://vocal.media/fiction/odes-and-accolades 3: An absolutely beautiful poem by Sheila L. Chingwa https://vocal.media/poets/thank-you-creator 4; A great critique on the misogyny in Mozart's "Magic Flute" by Jaye Ruggiero-Cash https://vocal.media/critique/a-brief-thought-the-magic-flute And finally 5: A wonderful extended haiku sequence by Kayleigh Fraser ❤️ https://vocal.media/poets/apples-and-eve

Hello. Cathy here. I write mostly poetry, fiction, and the occasional humorous bit about my sarcastic cat (I swear it's all true). Speaking of humor, check out this piece by Gerald Holmes about a recent medical procedure. It's hilarious. https://vocal.media/humor/the-day-i-met-the-one-eyed-snake?fbclid=IwAR2z3WGvffjGbN6usFfdc76Bak95VcMpSHx7GaDv0lYsSOvA3FYswCrPUXE

I've also been wowed by the potency of this self critique by Emma Kate Coleman - https://vocal.media/critique/critiquing-myself, And this revisiting of a writing exercise by ...oh! I hadn't realised! Also Emma Kate Coleman! Clearly loving a bit of Emma Kate Coleman this week! https://vocal.media/writers/reinventing-poets

Hello! I've really enjoyed this thought provoking essay on how we relate to our favourite books -https://vocal.media/bookclub/forever-changing-3u15h0di7 And it sits nicely in the conversation alongside Mackenzie Davis' top story, https://vocal.media/writers/vulnerability-as-art-separation

Oh... and if by some miracle you don't know this annoyingly prolific writer's work well... check out Ward Norcutt https://vocal.media/authors/ward-norcutt Sometimes I want to unfollow him he is so damn brilliant, even if you aren't in love with his style, his technical skill is ridiculously on point. He is also a good person. How annoying is that? I truly thought my entry for The Full Moon Challenge (write a poem inspired by a crazy dream) had a CHANCE of winning until I saw his winner... https://vocal.media/poets/the-topsy-turvey-men DEAR GOD. If he doesn't make you burn your laptop he'll light a fire under your ass. 🤣

Just happened on this writer today... https://vocal.media/authors/ofentse ... in particular this story: https://vocal.media/fiction/sello It pulls no punches. I think perhaps this writer is at the beginning of her writing life, but it is clear to me she has only just begun. Anyone with an eye and a heart can see that. I hope she leans into this ruthlessness and finds those that will encourage her to refine this incredible raw talent. ********************************************* As for me I will leave here what I have in my profile... Truth-Teller * Believer in Magic * Laughter-Lover My hope... to make art that matters, moves, (a)muses unlocks The Mystery leaves good in my wake so others might do the same. ********************* Go forth and BE VOCAL, y'all!

Today is our last challenge release for this awesome writing madness and James and I launched for the month of August. We’ve had so many amazing writers join in and share some incredible stories and poems. The challenges are always up and available for anyone to try regardless of august being basically over. Thank you to all the community that made it such a success! https://vocal.media/motivation/james-and-oneg-s-summer-writing-challenge-extravaganza

Chloe here! I write mostly sci-fi stories and some horror bits here and there, but recently I’ve also taken up free-verse poetry. I LOVED this piece by Earl W. Pearl. Take a look! He speaks the truth! https://vocal.media/poets/an-introduction-wj2e02f8

I have one more to share. Really like this writer's work in Wander Community and found this story so interesting. I probably won't be able to buy clothes in South Korea anytime soon. This piece by Sh*t Happens -Lost Travel Girl was very informative about one size fits means in South Korea https://vocal.media/wander/trying-to-fit-into-korea-s-one-size-fits-all-beauty-standards

  • Judey Kalchik 8 months ago

I am trying not to overshare, as I've noticed that it can be unintentionally upsetting to some folks. But it seems a little quiet today, so I am sharing just one more, from ThatWriterWoman. This one has such clever and deft usage of the old and the very new: I didn't want it to end. https://vocal.media/fiction/cinder-1ieo00ys
