Let's take a look at the "social" part of the Vocal Social Society. When it comes to chatting and engaging with each other on social media, we do a lot of it. My Vocal family has been there to support me through some pretty bleak points in my life. I'm sure the connections you've made through Vocal have made a difference to you, too, kind readers. We've had some big moments recently, including a multitude of top story placements and challenge winners. What better way to celebrate together than with a new column on The Chronicle. And just FYI, if you're reading this and you're not mentioned here but should be, write Les through The Chronicle's Facebook page! Because that's what quick-edit is for. ;)

~ Much love, Les

Are you new? Wondering just what is The Vocal Social Society (VSS)? Check out the intro below, then come back here for a recap on the latest fun.

What have we been up to the past couple weeks?

The Chronicle is going on Youtube - yeah, that means you get to hear (and perhaps chuckle) at our reading voices!

A note from the Creator leading the project: VCC Editor Caroline

Caroline's Poem for the Homecoming Challenge (Humble is her middle-name; she doesn't believe us when James and I tell her it's epic. If you like it, message her in her Youtube comments!)

In honour of the Fandom Challenge, VSS has created a Fellowship Initiative

We will be watching to see which dynamic duos rise from the shadows for the good of us all! We can't offer you a ring of power, but we can put your profile on a throne.

Pioneered by Sarah St. Erth

Challenge Wins

About the SFS:

"As summer comes to an end, so does Vocal's inaugural Summer Fictions Series (SFS) Challenge. If you're like me, you were elated at the daunting task of 8 short stories for the course of the season. Sure, the prospect of winning was encouraging, but never forget that any time you're writing at all, you're writing "up"! So take pride in what you've accomplished, whether that was one challenge or all eight. Keep going strong and writing "up" Vocal fam. Autumn has a brand new set of challenges. Step up to the plate, and let's hit it out of the park together." -James U. Rizzi

SFS-Long Thaw: Jessie Waddell 2nd place

"They told me I had been "revived." I guess my brain missed the memo. Any ability I had to feel seemed to be frozen long after my body was pulled from the water."

'A Day in the Life': Tom Brad 2nd place

"I am told regularly how lucky I am to live the life I live. It did take a lot of work to create this life and like any other life I have days in the sun and days in the rain. When you rely on so many external forces to carry you home there are times when you are at its mercy."

'A Day in the Life': Robyn Reisch 3rd place

"My job is classic, but it's also polarizing. I've been accused of being anti-feminist (completely untrue), lazy (wildly false), and privileged (yes - and it's a privilege I sincerely wish everyone had access to)."

'Fan(dom) Favourite': Conor Darrall 1st place

"Edith's love restored him, and he carried on with life, eventually becoming a contributor to the Oxford English Dictionary, a professor of English language and philology, a World War Two codebreaker, and most-famously, the author of the Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. He died, a hugely successful author, in 1973, mere months after the passing of his beloved Edith."

'Fan(dom) Favourite' Josh Lowe 2nd place

"But with all that said, Game of Thrones was more than just a fun evening show to me, and in between the graphic scenes of violence, incest and betrayal, I like to think it actually taught me a few life lessons. Its realism (despite being full of zombies and dragons) and unpredictability, made it all the more encapsulating, so it’s no wonder why it's earned the most Emmy Awards for a drama series AND for a fiction series."

The Fab 5

Some are chefs, some share family recipes, others provide windows into food from far-off lands. All will keep you reading and hungry for more." -Judey Kalchik, Admin of the Vocal Creators Support Group

VSS Member Shout-out: BABS IVERSON

Not only is she a delightfully entertaining writer, Babs consistently goes above and beyond to respond to the members on VSS who leave their work in the threads. VSS owes a debt of gratitude to her and we can't imagine the space without her positivity, thoughtful feedback and encouragement. Please check out some of her work. Our personal favourite is her fan fiction entry: Oz. CLICK HERE to visit BABS.

Vocal's Spotlight of Les

And some insight into James, the only guy in the group. Btw, he goes the extra mile to read all your poetry.

Speaking of poetry, we did promise you something new, and we've decided to offer a 3 day, weekend poetry fest that will run at the same time as the Fab 5. Post as much poetry as you like, then hop over and pay the 5 some love. You may have also seen the micro-poetry contest; results will be announced in the next issue. Stay tuned for an even bigger poetry announcement that is still in the works!
