Untamed PhotographerPublished 2 years ago in EarthA Dad Worth Fighting For
My childhood was nothing short of idyllic. I grew up in a nice house with a big driveway that I could ride my bike around, a big backyard where I played soccer with our dog, and a dad that would do anything for my brother and me. Now, it’s our turn to take care of him.

Cendrine MarrouatPublished 2 years ago in InterviewEvery Bruce Springsteen Album Ranked
20. Working on a Dream (2009) Without a doubt, Bruce's weakest effort. Some flashes of inspiration in the melodies and production are overshadowed by the insipid lyricism of songs like "Outlaw Pete," the title song, and "Surprise, Surprise." There's also "Queen of the Supermarket," a song whose subject matter is almost surreally bad, in that you really have to wrack your brain to convince yourself if Bruce really did write it, and if so, why? The rest of the record is largely uninspired, with even the best songs (minus "The Wrestler," which is more of a bonus track anyway) barely rising to the level of 'good.'

Dear Mom, I stole your socks. It wasn't intentional, I just borrowed them, but I never got the chance to give them back to you. I still have them, despite my many moves since. I keep them in my sock drawer, and I feel guilty even after twenty-seven years.
Mary HaynesPublished 2 years ago in FamiliesA Surfeit of F*cks
A Surfeit of F*cks Welcome to America One bright morning in April 2021, I had just exited a ramp and was merging with traffic. It seemed one of the other drivers was going to sideswipe me and so I laid hard on my horn and simultaneously yelled, “F*UCK YOU!!” They couldn’t have heard me, both our windows were up, the expressway thundered with the noise of dozens of cars. Still, it felt good to say that out loud. That wasn’t the first time I hurled that expletive in the 6 years I’ve been in the United States. It’s been a surfeit of f*ucks in God’s own country.

Jason ProvencioPublished 2 years ago in FamiliesWarnings
I close my eyes and scrub my hands over my face. It’s the second “well-meant-warning” post I’ve seen in the last two hours: someone has written another article/interview/parenting critique to parents everywhere on the danger children are perpetually in. The title is something like, His Daughter Is Abducted Right Under His Nose, and it’s a set-up scenario with real people and fake “abductors” filming the events. Some poor Dad, (who took his kid to the park and pulled his phone out of his pocket to text his wife back and say Yes, he will get milk on the way home, is pictured as the ‘negligent parent,’ while two filmmakers ‘abduct’ his little girl and send my blood pressure through the roof.
Alice J. LutherPublished 2 years ago in FamiliesThe Dragons of Valley High
There weren't always dragons in the Valley, and let me tell you: it was so boring. Of course some people complain, but some people are always complaining. For instance, when I was just a little kid, there were all kinds of heated arguments because our school officially changed it's name to Palmer Valley High. For the hundred previous years the school had operated under the name of a Confederate General. Gag. You'd think that people would understand why that had to change, but you'd be wrong.

I sit here on this slab, complete with pen and notebook. My surroundings are full of lush greenery and a waterfall rushes by. The birds make sweet melodies out of their cute little tweets, while the animals in the fields communicate and sing to each other. The sky is a mesmerizing blue, and the sun is so bright, diamonds dance off this grey dull slab. I have been sat here, mesmerized by this beautiful imagery for hours, and yet I still have a blank page. The beautiful scenery is distracting, and it has completely blanked my mind.

Nour BoustaniPublished 2 years ago in Motivation#60yearsofJamesBond: Diamonds are Forever
In 1971, James Bond was going through a bit of a crisis. After star Sean Connery decided he wanted to leave after 1967's "You Only Live Twice", producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli cast George Lazenby for 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". However, due to a combination of poor relations and Lazenby's agent believing the franchise to be over, he didn't sign on for another film. This left Saltzman and Broccoli in a bit of a bind: either recast the role, which could present similar problems to those encountered previously, or try to entice Connery back. In the end, studio United Artists decided for them: get Connery back, and money was no object. Connery ended up returning for $1.25 million, a then unheard of sum, and a huge amount of creative control over this film and two back-to-back films of his choice. After a rocky few years, the producers decided they wanted to go back to the formula of "Goldfinger", the movie that had really launched Bond onto the global stage: big action set pieces, extravagant villains, direction from Guy Hamilton and a theme song sung by Shirley Bassey. And, while being a commercial and box office smash back in 1971, it is a film that isn't looked back upon as one of the greats, with an outrageous plot and a lacklustre central performance from Connery. In contrast to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which has gone up in appreciation since its release, this is a film that time has not been kind to, and doesn't stand out as one of the greats - even for comedy camp value, which this film provides in spades.

Dear mom, 2018 Afternoon Tea at Lady Bedford's in 2018. Picture by author We attend Afternoon Tea at Lady Bedford’s Tea Parlour as part of our mother-daughter outings. You were nervously suspended in a world of dainty china in a shop that held an air of aristocracy. We melted right in with the hosts’ explanation of the menu and selection of loose leaf teas. Our fingers nabbed soft scones slathered with clotted cream off the three-tiered tray that held sides of strawberry jam and tart lemon curd. We ate crunchy tempura shrimp and a variety of finger sandwiches and miniature confections. It all was topped off with sugar cubes twirled in cups of fragrant warm tea.
