Intro

Sleep, often overlooked in our fast-paced world, is an essential component of our overall well-being.

I often find myself caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, sacrificing precious hours of sleep to meet deadlines, fulfil obligations, or simply indulge in my hobbies

However, this usually comes at a cost.

I have been sick for the past 3 weeks, but really, really sick. I've been coughing, had throat infections, fever, cold,… everything.

And I'm quite sure it was because of a lack of sleep.

Not only my health, but also my productivity suffers

Seriously, not enough sleep can have a negative impact on our physical health, mental clarity, and overall productivity.

This is why I decided to write this article.

In some magazine a while ago, I read about an intriguing technique called the "military sleep technique" that can help you maximize the benefits of your slumber.

The technique is basically derived from practices used by the military to ensure optimal rest in challenging environments. It aims to help individuals fall asleep quickly, even under stressful conditions.

By incorporating a series of relaxation exercises and mindful approaches, the military sleep technique can promote deep relaxation and facilitate faster entry into the restorative stages of sleep.

Quite fascinating, no?

The quick sleep formula has 3 important parts:

  1. Muscle Relaxation
  2. Focused Breathing
  3. Visualization

Here Are the Steps Involved:

Step 1: Free yourself from all the chores and sit on your bed’s edge.

Ensure that your bedside light is off, and your phone is on DND mode (airplane mode).

Now relax your face.

If you haven’t done it before, here’s an easy way — first, tighten your face through a wince, and then let your facial muscles relax naturally. Also, let your tongue drop down in any manner in your mouth.

Step 2: Let gravity pull down your shoulders, relax your body

After relaxing your facial muscles, let gravity pull down your shoulders as if it has no energy of its own.

Breathe out while you do this. Relaaaaaxxxxx.

Step 3: inhale and exhale slowly, focusing on the “swishing” sound of your breath.

Count “one” on inhale, “two” on exhale.

one…two…one…two…one…two… keep going, focus on your breath.

Step 4: Allow gravity to soften your thighs and lower legs with each breath.

Make sure you’re in a comfortable position, relax your thighs and legs even more. You’re sinking into your mattress, you’re almost there.

Step 5: Silence your mind by visualizing “black”.

Just imagine seeing only black. Focus on the black. Don’t let your mind drift away to start imagining pictures, ideas, things that happened today, etc.

Don’t allow your mind to drift away in thoughts, just keep “seeing black”.

Optionally: You can also imagine yourself sitting at a tranquil place like mountains, beaches, boats, a rocking chair, etc.

Within a few minutes, you’ll drift off to sleep.

Caveat: The effectiveness of this method depends on practice and how well you can silence your mind from the “restless” thoughts of daily activities.

Conclusion

So, whether you find yourself struggling to fall asleep at night, or you simply desire to enhance the effectiveness of your slumber, just give the military sleep technique a try.

Never underestimate the power of a well-rested mind and body, and learn to fall asleep effortlessly with these simple steps for ultimate productivity & success!

Always remember this question: How will you perform well during the day, if you don't give your mind & body the rest it needs at night?!
