Confession time: I have not always been an active Vocal member. I joined in April 2019 and posted one poem, Find Them. I didn’t post anything again until February 2020. The daunting number of balls I juggled during that period could have been considered an admirable safety hazard violation worthy of Guinness World Records status.

Covid-19, PPE, and R number are terms much like ‘self-isolate’ and ‘social distancing’ that I’ve heard enough of, although there is no suggestion here to throw caution to the wind. The repetition of such expressions for months on end has impacted us all.

Leaving Lego, Loss, and Ligature Points
The internal surface area of my home is an active minefield. Camouflaged, a stealth dagger caught me forgetting slippers in my hurry to feed Benji. I stifle a howl, managing not to curse, but I can’t be the only parent who’s let a “shit” or a “dammit” slip out after stepping on yet another Lego piece.

Ocean breezes predicted today, tomorrow, and the day after that
You could be miserable, disgusted, and grumpy all the time on a subtropical island, but only if you tried really hard every day. It may be the reason why I don’t remember meeting many people who fit the profile as I grew up. Those who temporarily achieved such states were referred to as looking 'gribble' and seldom stayed that way long.

To All the Stuffed Ones I've Loved Before
Green check gingham-patterned frog is perched ever smiling on my window ledge, reminding me of how fantastic life is. After snatching up said frog on impulse from a thrift store, I neglected to give this stuffed beacon of eternal joy a name but arbitrarily assigned him a gender. His assignment was simple: 1. Be forever cute and lovable. 2.Retain softness and remind me to smile (whenever he could get my attention.)

This is for the writers who hesitate. Me. Possibly you too, but definitely me. And for those who can write effortlessly for hours on end and not give a hoot. But the instant someone___let’s say an editor, noted author, or review panel___is going to read what has been written, transform into a frantic, second-guessing, longwinded redraft-manic mess.

A Tribute for Daddy
The earliest childhood memory I have is of being with my father in the water. He had taken my brother and me swimming just off the rocks not far from where we lived in Pembroke Park. In later years, I brought up this vivid recollection in conversation, and he was visibly stunned.
