About this challenge
The Prompt
Invent a word, then write a microfiction story that encapsulates its meaning.
A neologism is a newly coined word. We challenge you to invent a new word that encapsulates a specific yet previously undefined sensation, emotion, action, or phenomenon – akin to how the word 'petrichor' describes the scent of earth after rain. Once you've crafted your word and defined its meaning, pen a microfiction piece that captures its essence. Through your story, readers should gain an implicit understanding of the word without it being overtly defined. Your new word should be included the title of your piece, and the definition of it should be in the subtitle. You do not need to include the neologism within the body of your story.

Judging
The Neolomicro Challenge will be judged on:
- The quality and engagement of the microfiction story.
- The originality of the neologism itself.
Below are some helpful questions to ask yourself as you write.
Neologism
- Is the word truly unique?
- Does the word represent a concept or sensation that can be universally or easily understood?
- Does the word bring a new dimension to the English language?
Microfiction
- Engagement: Does the story captivate the reader from beginning to end?
- Contextual Use: Is the essence of the neologism captured within the story, allowing readers to infer its meaning?
- Creativity: How original and imaginative is the story? Does it offer a fresh perspective or narrative?
- Clarity: Is the story well-structured and easy to understand?
We look forward to learning the words we always wished existed, and if we're lucky, we'll see your word in the dictionary someday 🤞

Whispering Woods Challenge Winners
Congratulations to Morgan Christy Rickards for their winning Whispering Woods story, Guardian at the Gate. Morgan has been a Vocal creator since February 2021, and this is their first time placing in Challenge — well done, starting with a win! Guardian at the Gate draws evocatively from Welsh tales of the Cantre'r Gwaelod, a lost sunken kingdom between the forest and the sea. Heledd’s dangerous adventure pulls her towards the water but her spirit is anchored in the woods: Morgan’s writing is atmospheric and exciting.

Well, your Snacktime Sonatas made us hungry, and that’s about the highest compliment we have. Food — taste, smell, sensation — is a powerful conduit to the past, to memories pleasurable and painful and sometimes bittersweet, a mixture of comfort and challenge. Congratulations to Penny Fuller for Sativa — it’s a first win for Penny — a hymn to the “secret, unbounded/freedoms” of fresh peas in the pod. The narrative voice of the poem doesn’t really want to be outside, but finds joy in the green things of the earth; this is a lovely work of resilience.
