Possible adverse reactions to paracetamol: is it safe to use paracetamol on a regular basis?

Is it safe to take paracetamol every day

Painkillers like paracetamol are the most often used. According to the findings of a medical research, those who use paracetamol on a consistent basis may be at an increased risk of developing certain illnesses that are more fatal.

Up until quite recently, it was generally believed that paracetamol was a medicine that was perfectly safe to use in individuals who had high blood pressure symptoms. On the other hand, a research conducted in 2022 discovered that the impact on blood pressure is comparable to that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), with ibuprofen being one example.

In addition to their application in the management of chronic pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are known to raise blood pressure and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The experts have said that it is possible to anticipate that the rise in blood pressure would result in a twenty percent increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke. Researchers have suggested that patients who have a prescription for the painkiller for an extended period of time should be given the lowest effective dosage for the shortest amount of time feasible. This medication is often used for the treatment of chronic pain.

Blood pressure is one of the most significant risk factors for heart attacks and strokes, and this research demonstrates that paracetamol, which is the medicine that is taken the most in the world, causes a rise in blood pressure.

According to Professor Dear, it is important for patients and their physicians to "consider the risks versus the benefits" jointly, particularly in cases when patients are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. According to him, people who have hypertension (high blood pressure) have a rise in their blood pressure after receiving therapy with paracetamol for a period of two weeks.

The National Health Service Lothian (NHS) Lothian expert in clinical pharmacology and nephrology said that those who take paracetamol on a sporadic basis need not be concerned.

This does not pertain to the use of paracetamol for a short period of time to treat headaches or fever, which is perfectly acceptable; but, it does point to a recently identified danger for those who use it on a consistent basis over a longer period of time, often for the treatment of chronic pain.

After the participants stopped taking the medication, their blood pressure reverted to the level it had been at the beginning of the trial, which suggests that the medication was responsible for the rise in blood pressure.

In the United Kingdom, researchers said that they did not have reliable figures of the individuals who are using paracetamol for an extended period of time and who had high blood pressure. According to estimates, however, one in every three persons in the United Kingdom suffers from excessive blood pressure and takes paracetamol on a daily basis.

The scientists claim that the research was designed to show a very little influence on blood pressure, and they were taken aback when they discovered that the impact was far more than they had anticipated.

The results "emphasise why doctors and patients should regularly review whether there is an ongoing need to take any medication" and "always weigh up the benefits and risks," according to the medical director of the British Heart Foundation, which was the organisation that provided funding for the research.

A high blood pressure diagnosis is diagnosed in around one third of persons in the United Kingdom. In England, 26% of women and 31% of men fall under this category. Therefore, we need to exercise caution in the manner in which we take paracetamol on a daily basis.
