Notes from the Mind Palace
The Surface Tension and the Fault Lines
I’m not the kind of person you understand in one sitting. Most people meet me and think they’ve got me entirely figured out within the first five minutes. They see someone loud, expressive, fast-moving, a little chaotic, and a little sharp around the edges. They look at the alternative clothes, hear the heavy music, and assume that the outer shell is the whole story. They don’t realize that’s just the surface tension. It’s the glare on top of dark water. The real story runs underneath, miles below the noise, quieter, stranger, and far more deliberate than anyone outside ever gives me credit for. If you only look at the velocity on the outside, you miss the gravity on the inside.
I’ve lived a life built out of fragments. My history isn’t a clean, linear narrative; it’s a mosaic made of objects people left behind, conversations that never finished, and places I stayed either too long or not long enough. I collect things—not because they hold any material value to the rest of the world, but because they carry distinct, unmistakable echoes. A rusted hinge from an old gate, a chipped coffee mug, a stray feather caught in a wire fence. I like the things that don’t make any sense until you stop, slow down, and look twice. I like the things that carry a history of survival.
People are the exact same way.
I don’t care about the polished version of someone they hand out to the world like a business card. I don’t care about the shallow edits people apply to their personalities just to blend in or make themselves palatable. I care about the version they keep tightly tucked behind their ribs—the raw, unfiltered self they refuse to show unless they feel completely safe. I want to know what someone thinks about when they are staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m., unable to sleep. I want to know the words they almost say but swallow at the last second. I want to know what some notice in a crowded room that no one else does.
I’m not interested in small talk. I don’t care about the weather, or the polite, meaningless scripts we are expected to recite just to pass the time. I’m interested in the fault lines. I want to see where the earth cracked, where the foundations shifted, and where the scars settled into the bone.
Because of that, I’ve spent years learning how to read things that aren't spoken aloud. I read hands, faces, rooms, and silences. It’s not because I’m trying to be mystical or performative; it’s because a lifetime of navigating chaos has taught me that the truth of a person rarely comes out of their mouth first. Words are too easy to edit, too easy for a defensive mind to manipulate. The real truth comes out in the heavy way a person hesitates before speaking. It comes out in the way they subtly shift their weight when a specific topic is brought up, or the way their breath hitches right before they answer a direct question. The body always tells on the soul long before the tongue catches up.
I’m not perfect. I’m not polished. I’m not effortless, and I have never claimed to be. I am entirely real, and I show up to every single interaction with all my intensity completely intact. I don’t know how to do things halfway, and I don't know how to love or care in moderation. If someone is looking for a halfway connection—something easy, superficial, and easily tucked away when it gets too heavy—they won’t like me. They will find me to be too much, too intense, too feral to handle. But if someone wants absolute, unyielding honesty, they usually do like me. They find a strange kind of safety in knowing exactly where they stand.
I’m the kind of person who remembers the tiny details that no one else notices. I will remember the exact phrase you used years ago, the specific look in your eye when you were uncomfortable, or the way you hold your palm when you're trying to protect yourself. I’m the kind of person who sees patterns before they fully form, tracking the shadows and anticipating the storm long before the first drop of rain ever hits the ground. I will match someone’s energy completely—but only if they give me something real, something substantial, and something worth matching in the first place. I have no energy left to waste on ghosts or pretenders.
I don’t need someone to be flawless. I don’t need a partner or a friend who has their entire life perfectly arranged like neat furniture in an empty house. I live with chronic pain, hyper vigilance, and a mind that refuses to shut down, so I know better than anyone that life leaves bruises. I don’t need perfection. I just need them to be entirely present. I need them to show up in the quiet spaces, in the dark, and in the middle of the noise without flinching or looking for an exit door.
There is an entire landscape beneath the conversations we have every day, and that is the only place where real connection actually grows. I look for the people who value depth over distance, the ones who aren't afraid to navigate the quieter, heavier corners of human experience together. True familiarity isn't built overnight, nor is it found in casual passing; it is a slow, gradual uncovering of the things that truly matter. I have spent a lifetime learning how to navigate the complicated paths of survival, and because of that journey, I value the rare comfort of spaces where people can simply exist as they are, without pretense or hesitation.
I don’t chase people anymore. I don’t beg for attention, and I don’t run after those who are content to keep one foot out the door. Chasing implies a lack of certainty, and I am entirely certain of what I bring to the table. Instead of chasing, I open doors. I unlock the gates, I let the fractures show, and I stand firmly at the threshold with all my intensity, my history, and my music intact. The ones who are genuinely meant to walk through that door always do. They see the light through the cracks, they recognize the gravity under the surface, and they step inside without needing to be asked twice.
