6 Powerful Ways to Transform Your Life After 50

Are you dreading your next birthday?

By Elaine Sihera Published 2 days ago • 7 min read

If you are under 40 years old, how do you view getting older?

Perhaps with some anxiety, fear, dread, resignation, or acceptance? If you feel anxiety, you wouldn’t be alone. A survey carried out by a lifestyle magazine three years ago revealed that the age group which feared getting older the most were the 24 year olds! Yet one would think that, with their whole life ahead of them, getting older shouldn’t even feature in their thoughts.

Sadly, too many people fear getting older because of all kinds of factors, mainly connected with social brainwashing and the problems of others. They also see a long life without ageing as some kind of right and entitlement. But Nature is pretty clear with all life forms: we born, we grow, we age, we die. Unless we die young, there is no escaping the cycle - a fact that needs to be accepted with both gratitude and grace for the precious time most of us enjoy.

The age of turmoil seems to appear at 50 - that dreaded half century when many people realise that they have most of their life behind them. They have done the birth and growth, and are on their way to the 'getting older' part, with the departure lounge gradually becoming visible. It then gets worse after 60, when many people are forced into mandatory retirement, and are gradually excluded from both society and the world of work. It can be a difficult time of adjustment, if one has led a very active and inclusive life. It is not so surprising that this stage is the beginning of acute isolation and loneliness for some people, hence it also carries one of the biggest suicide rates in the UK. But it really needn’t be like that at all.

In fact, if you view being older as another positive chapter of your existence, by the time fifty rolls around, you are likely to realise something liberating: that the days of trying to please everyone else, fitting into someone else's box, or playing a supporting role in your own story are now behind you. You have earned the wisdom and understanding of what truly matters and what is just noise.

However, even with that clarity, life can sometimes slip into comfortable, uninspiring routines. You might find yourself tolerating habits or actions that quietly drain your energy and rob you of your spark. Being an option in your own life - whether to demanding work, stagnant routines, or old expectations -tend to take a heavy toll. It keeps you feeling cautious, small, and stuck in second-best, denying you the full freedom, and deep satisfaction, you deserve.

But you can transform this period of life to your advantage, though true transformation after fifty years old isn't about chasing a radical reinvention or starting over from scratch. It is about jettisoning what no longer serves you, and consciously choosing to step into your own personal power. It is also about building a daily reality that is rooted in self-respect, authentic connection, and unapologetic self-assurance.

We are in a different age now, one of individuality, global information, and the ubiquitous - and sometimes overwhelming - technology. We can make them all work for us, if we leave the dinosaur mentality behind and grasp the chance of a new life with both hands. We can reinvent ourselves many times over, create new initiatives, make new friends, or do virtually whatever we like, if we have the confidence, self-belief, and determination to accept those possibilities, and actually do something about them.

To help you achieve that, here are six powerful, practical ways to transform your everyday life into one that gives you new hope, mental energy, new perspectives and possibilities.

1. A computer and the Internet

Technology is our world. We can either embrace it or be left behind like fading dinosaurs. Armed with a computer and the Internet, there is little we cannot do, or any dream that cannot be fulfilled. On a simple level we can follow hobbies, join in discussions, make friends all over the world, or in our locality, find a partner or companion, buy what we like online, join local Meetup groups to get us out of our home and into social activity, or we can even make our own websites to give life to that thought or idea. The Internet is literally our personal lab and library where we can experiment to our heart’s content with all the technology at our disposal

2. Have a dream or two

Keep dreaming on and on. We never stop yearning and learning until we die. Dreams represent hopes, and without hope we are finished. It doesn’t matter what age you are, life is never finished till it’s done. The average mortality rate in the developed world is 84 for women and 81 for men. If you are 60 now, what are you going to do with the next 20-25 years you might have? Sit and stare at your walls and feel sorry for yourself? Those extra years could be amazing in their potential for a new life and adventure.

3. Take the focus off the self and look outward to others

This is a great age for making a difference to someone else. Volunteer! Visit someone lonely in hospital, read to someone blind, be a mentor to a younger person. Start a hobby group so that others can join you in it. Go on a dating app and see who else might be there for you. Start a competition of some kind that will help others feel great about themselves. Try out a new activity, etc., etc. The list is endless in this regard. All it takes is imagination and something you like, and you never know what you could be capable of, and what you could make possible, especially if you like to organise. I started a Meet up group to increase my social activities and unexpectedly met my current partner - 10 years ago, and still counting!

4. Lose the fear and move with the times

We all have two choices when it comes to life - to get busy living it, or get busy dying (to quote from one of my favourite films!). Fear has no place in our lives when we are older, because we have already been there, done that and got the T-shirt. This is OUR time now, when the world is truly what we wish to make it.

Mindset and attitude are so important in the ageing process. Many people at this age don’t even have to depend on anyone for anything, especially after they have left the workplace. It means that they can give full rein to those cherished ideas lying dormant and needing life. But it depends on how they see the world, and the daily thoughts they have. Negative thoughts build nothing, they simply destroy potential.

Time to retrain, to learn new things, to raise awareness of using social media, to do something different, to be inventive, or just to put that dream you have been carrying around for years into action - like writing a book, or ebook, and having it published. It is so ridiculously easy to do that now on Amazon. Lose that fear and soar to the skies. Make those hopes and aspirations into reality, so that you have no regrets when you cannot do them anymore.

5. Feel proud of your achievements, no matter what they are

When we are older and feel excluded from what matters to us, we are inclined to belittle or downplay what we have achieved already. But we all make our mark on our world in some individual way, even if it is only within our family. Be proud of that, enjoy the memories, and be thankful you were able to accomplish whatever you desired, even if it was to spend precious time with your grandchildren, when many people were prevented from theirs through an early death. Take nothing for granted, and you won’t belittle what you worked so hard to accomplish. That will also keep your confidence and self-belief in place when you are not feeling that great.

6. Smile more, and often

A smile is the greatest gift we have to give because it reaches across boundaries, across languages, cultures and barriers and is all embracing. It makes us feel good, and also gives others permission to share that smile, making them feel welcome and valued. Most of all, smiling often and regularly helps us to feel healthier, and far more attractive, than just having a frown. Give that smile generously. You never know what effect it’s having on your world and those around you!

These are simple, but important, things we can do to take charge of the later years of life, to make them work for us, to feel pride in who we are, and to keep abreast of, and included in, a rapidly changing world. Above all, they will show us that age isn’t just a number in life. We have to age; but we are the ones who actually choose HOW we age.

Looking forward to seeing you at the next disco dancing event (one of my favourite pastimes)! :)
