Protest of Mount Rushmore Presidential Visit
In 1980 the United States Supreme Court ruled that the U.S. had illegally taken the Black Hills (the location of Mount Rushmore) from the Sioux Nation. $100 million in reparations was awarded but the Sioux Nation refused the money citing that the land was never for sale. They wanted to keep the land. Although the Supreme Court had ruled the land had been illegally taken the land was not returned.

June 22 is Judy Garland Day
Judy was born in the month of June and also died on June 22. Judy Garland will forever be remembered as Dorothy from the iconic film The Wizard of Oz. She was so much more than just that film! Born on June 10 in 1922 Frances Ethel Gumm lost her life to an accidental overdose while in London on June 22 in 1969. She had just turned 47. It seems hard to believe it has been more than 50 years since her passing.

Meet Susan Rice
Speculated to be on the Vice President Short List Susan Rice was born on November 17, 1964 in Washington D.C. Her mother is Lois Rice who assisted in the creation of the Pell Grant in 1972. Her father, Emmett Rice, was an economics professor at Cornell University as well as only the second black governor of the Federal Reserve System. Susan’s parents divorced when she was ten years old.

Jill Tracy Jacobs was born on June 3, 1951 (Happy Belated Birthday!) in Hammonton, New Jersey but she actually grew up in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. She has four younger sisters. Her father was the head of a savings and loan in Philadelphia. She comes from an Italian ancestry.

Happy Birthday Hattie McDaniel
Hattie McDaniel was born on June 10, 1893 in Wichita, Kansas. Hattie began her career in 1914 when she and her sister, Etta Goff, launched a variety show. In 1920 she joined the Melody Hounds, a black touring group. By the mid 1920s the group was singing on the radio. During this time Hattie was writing her own songs and by late 1927 to 1929 she had begun to record many of her own songs in Chicago.

We Celebrate the Birthday of Anne Frank
We Remember Anne Frank on June 12. Her Birthday. ANNE FRANK was born June 12, 1929 in Germany. She died February/March 1945 at the age of 15 years. She dies in a Nazi Germany concentration camp after she and her sister Margot along with her parents were found to be hiding in concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where her father, Otto Frank worked. Anne and Margot’s father Otto started a company, Pectacon, a wholesale distributer of spices, herbs and pickling salts. While in hiding from July 1942 until their capture in 1944 Anne kept a diary she had received for her 13th birthday in 1942.
