There is no doubt that both Joker and Parasite have created a stir in the world of cinema and very much both deserve to take home Best Picture - in my opinion they are both jarring works of art that directly point a bold finger at how people suffer as as a result of wealth inequality, but they accomplish this in different ways. In this article, I will compare Joker and Parasite and demonstrate the similarities and differences between the narrative structures and representations within these two Best Picture nominees.

Jojo Rabbit (January 2020, Fox Searchlight Pictures) Source: Nerdist Directed and produced by Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Ragnarok and genius behind What We Do in the Shadows, Jojo Rabbit is a satirical depiction of Nazi Germany following a 10-year-old who has Adolf Hitler for an imaginary friend. Starring an honourable cast including Waititi himself, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell, this tongue-in-cheek comedy is already screening in US cinemas but will have its premiere in the UK and other countries worldwide from January 1st onwards.

If you love coming-of-age gritty comedies, you’re bound to enjoy this. If you love skateboarding movies, you’ll love it even more.

Doctor Sleep (31 October, Intrepid Pictures) Source: Slashfilm The long-awaited follow up to Stephen King's The Shining hits screens on October 31st—the sequel gives us a window through the eyes of an adult Danny Torrance, who reflects on the trauma he experienced as a five year old at the Overlook Hotel. Ewan McGregor plays Danny, who is struggling to find peace of mind and resorts to drinking to drown out the echoes of his disturbed childhood. When he meets someone who shares his extrasensory gift, instead of feeling reassured, Danny is forced to relive the horrors of his past all over again. Doctor Sleep will be screening at UK cinemas from 31 October and US cinemas from 8th November—head down and find yourself chanting "Redrum" all over again.
