We'll start the thread:

Delve into the fascinating exploration of the origins of "woke" with Geoffrey Philp's compelling piece, Marcus Garvey & The Origins of Woke. Philp takes us on a journey back to the 1930s, where he unveils the word's usage in African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) as a symbol of awareness and enlightenment. By tracing the term's evolution, this captivating narrative unveils its diverse application by influential figures and illuminates its profound significance within the African-American community's ongoing battle for equality. This thought-provoking story not only provides valuable historical context but also emphasizes the timeless importance of maintaining awareness, engagement, and activism in the pursuit of lasting social change.

Hi, my name is Andrew Geist. Been writing as a hobby, and I am coming to enjoy it. I wanted to share a few of my projects to get a few comments and insights to help me improve on my amateur writing. If I happen to earn something off it great. But I am hoping to improve before I start making a full go at this!

Wonderful work . Hi , I’m Noor Ul Ain . I have a very decent background . I write fictional stories and some of them are true . The sad ones are my life’s story haha I’m just kinda exposing myself but I love to write because now I have a way to express my feelings in words before that I just used to stay quiet but now I have a way to take my stress out . And yeah in my sad stories SHE is actually me and SHE’S just so broke because the scars remained……

I am Novel, like Cathy says, I write lots of babbling nonsense. I am best at Poetry I think. Today I highlight, Tiffany Gordon, Dharrsheena, Mariann, Babs, Jay Kantor, Stephanie Bradbury, Donna Fox, Grz Colm (check out his movie reviews). I have more, making a list. People who are always lifting my spirit and encouraging me. Check out their stories. Introducing D. Alexander Porter. "June Bug" and other stories. More to say later. Gotta run.

I am Jamaican by birth. This presentation by Philp on the topic of 'woke' has really opened my eyes. Garvey is considered a national hero in my country. A really controversial figure. I know the deep meaning of being woke, but this article brought home some key points and important notes towards all peoples of all races. Everyone should give it a read.

This week I'd like to make especial mention of a story by Kylecovey Smith, Chaos in Camelot: Battle for the Dragon Star, which is part of a series if you'd like to read more. Kylecovey's work is enjoyable to all, but I suspect anime fans in particular will be as blown away by Chaos in Camelot as I was. With just a few deft sure dashes of prose, Kylecovey somehow invokes an entire world of tropes and conventions which will seem suddenly and uncannily vivid to anyone with memories of the OAV era. Take especial note of the striking visual pictures called forth by Kylecovey's minimalist descriptions, which succeed by relying on a shared grounding in the anime art styles of that time, while his decision to incorporate direct speech into the sentence structure brilliantly suggests subtitles to be read, while the Japanese audio rattles along somewhere on the boundaries of your perception. I've seldom seen such a masterful marriage of content and form. Readers of a certain age are guaranteed to be transported back to the video cassette era! https://vocal.media/fiction/chaos-in-camelot?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Comment%20Received%20-%20Reply%20%5BTriggered%20Mail%5D#comments

From the recent stories I read, I’d like bring these to your attention: Mike Singleton-Mikeydred on Theremin (I like all his music educational stories but this one spoke to me) https://vocal.media/beat/theremin-a-playlist Judy Kalchik’s Mr.Roger’s legacy story https://vocal.media/motivation/143-mr-rogers-won-t-you-be-my-neighbor-c7sg0uwq Kelsey Clarey’s poem I Am Still Here https://vocal.media/poets/i-am-still-here-39looe0eqo Mark Ganon’s Tradition https://vocal.media/families/tradition-nvq00n0u Kendall Defoe’ How to run a secret society https://vocal.media/confessions/how-to-run-a-secret-society There are so many more great stories and authors on this wonderful platform, but these ones just struck the cord with me recently.

  • Ian Read10 months ago

Hi everyone! My name is Ian. I am an archaeologist and post-grad student, but fiction writing used to be a hobby that I have recently rediscovered. A couple years ago I decided to enter some contests on Vocal and enjoyed the process a lot. Due to some recent unfortunate events, I have come back from another hiatus in writing. I dabble in various forms and genres, but I prefer fantasy and science fiction. I do not have much up as of yet, but I am happy to share what I do have. If you have any feedback or advice, feel free to comment! My latest creation is https://vocal.media/fiction/voyage-of-the-chevalier-episode-1-a-nefarious-patron

Heather N King has done a whole series of really good and really fun cryptid stories of which the one about Grey's currently on the front page is only a sampling. On behalf of L.C. Shafer (Sorry L.C., I don't know how to do the umlaut) who also wanted to recommend her work in this forum; I'd like to give you a link to another one of her stories I very much enjoyed. This one is just a little bit creepier: https://vocal.media/horror/the-mothman-an-investigation-into-the-fluttering-phenomenon From there you won't go wrong checking out the rest of this ongoing series!

I've already written you about this but I would love to see more of us featured in Mariann Carroll's interview series be featured on the Top Story board as well so that the Vocal community can get to know us better. I had the pleasure of being an interviewee and Mariann does a phenomenal job of drawing out the best in her interview subjects. Her talent is boundless. Here is one of her most recent ones. It is excellent! https://vocal.media/interview/a-modern-day-viking-writer-among-us-gary-ragnarsson-arctic
