NARCISSISTS FORCE YOU INTO ALIGNMENT WITH GOD

The shadow can scream. The light does not need to.

By THE HONED CRONEPublished about 5 hours ago 3 min read

There is an ancient mystery: if God is everything, where does the darkness belong?

In the beginning, there was darkness—and God said, Let there be light. The universe itself seems to speak in this language: light and shadow, death and renewal, creation and dissolution. Even the yin-yang carries the paradox: each contains a seed of the other.

So perhaps the devil is not a rival to God, but the shadow cast by separation from God. Not an equal power. Not something to worship. Not something to fear.

Because the instruction keeps returning: Do not be afraid.

Fear is the doorway through which the shadow convinces you it is the whole universe.

This is what the narcissist attempts to become.

He wedges himself between you and your inner teacher—the quiet intelligence you call intuition, conscience, discernment, gut knowing, spirit. He tells you what you feel. What you meant. What you wanted. What you did. What you are.

You. You. You.

Until his voice becomes so loud that your own begins answering back.

I feel this. I want this. I did this. Didn’t I?

That is the invasion.

Children raised beneath domination can inherit a scrambled internal operating system: boundaries violated, perception contradicted, affection weaponized, criticism alternating with praise, terror followed by tenderness, betrayal followed by gifts. Love and hate become braided together until chaos feels like intimacy.

It can take a long road out of hell.

But there is an exit.

It is within.

When a man is raging in your face, swinging his fist toward your head with contempt in his eyes, and something inside you says, This is wrong—listen.

When you are walking on eggshells, confused, obsessed with another person’s moods, and your body says, Get away—listen.

When someone insists they know what is best for you while you sit quietly trying to hear God—listen to the stillness.

God does not need to scream.

The light does not need to impersonate thunder.

Jesus says, Follow me. Be still and know. The kingdom of God is within you.

The journey is not to obey every voice that claims authority. It is to discern the voice.

Which voice is fear?
Which voice is conditioning?
Which voice arrived from outside?
Which voice remains when the room becomes silent?

God’s voice, in this mythology, is not frantic. It does not need coercion. It does not need contempt. It does not need you to abandon yourself.

So pray without ceasing.

Pray. Keep marching.

Pray while frightened.
Pray while confused.
Pray while leaving.
Pray while rebuilding.

And say:

I trust my perception.
I trust the wisdom God placed within me.
I go toward the light.
I love you.
I will not abandon you again.

This is why the narcissist may seem to become more desperate when you reclaim your agency. The external voice loses its throne.

The shadow cannot survive direct illumination.

Love-bombing is not necessarily light. A manufactured glow can be an instrument of control. A predator can dangle a beautiful lantern while leading someone deeper into the swamp.

You must become immune to the currency of the external: contempt and flattery, criticism and praise. They may appear to be opposites, but they can serve the same purpose: worship me. Worship me outside of yourself. Flattery is not love. Love-bombing is not love. Neither is contempt, criticism, coercion, or control. One drug sedates you with grandiosity; the other crushes you with shame. Both attempt to make an external voice more powerful than your own relationship with God. God does not need to flatter your ego or destroy it. God simply is. Constant. Honest. Bedrock. The truth may hurt. It may piss you off. It may tell you what you do not want to hear. But it sets you free. That is the difference between divine love and manipulation: one teaches, shapes, corrects, and liberates; the other demands surrender to an external throne.

But real light gives you back to yourself.

And perhaps this is the strange spiritual lesson: the predator does not have to know he is serving the lesson. He may believe he is conquering you. Yet every attempt to override your conscience can teach you discernment. Every violation can reveal the boundary. Every lie can sharpen your relationship with truth. Every false light can teach you to recognize the real one.

Forgive without surrendering your boundaries.

Extend grace without handing over your agency.

You do not have to defeat the darkness. You have to stop worshiping it.

Turn toward the light.

Let the storm burn what must be burned. Let the old self die. Let God resurrect what is true.

There is no need to follow the shadow into the depths.

There is an exit.

And it is within.
