How Full Are You?

How Joining Vocal Has Made Me Aware Of How People Are Affected My Mental Health Issues

Introduction

I'll be honest I joined Vocal to win challenges but was soon aware that I will never be good enough in Vocal's eyes for that, but I have gained an absolute treasure chest of wonderful supportive loving friends and while recognition with financial recompense is great to get, my friendships to me are worth far more.

The music I have chosen to accompany this piece is "Where Is My Mind" by The Pixies, because this is about what goes on in our minds. The title of this article refers to your mind not your stomach and now I will continue.

So What Is This All About?

There are times, especially at work, and in my work with Vocal Groups that I feel totally overwhelmed because there is not enough room in my head to deal with the tasks that I am expected to do. I feel everything is going to suddenly spill out and leave a big mess that I will be incapable of clearing up and that no one else can help with because of the areas that I am working in.

We should always be able to ask for help, but most of us are too frightened to ask for help for fear of loading things onto people who are already heavily burdened and maybe showing that we are not capable of dealing with the things that we need to deal with.

I am coming to think that we all have different capacities beforw things become too much for us. Sometimes it's literally the straw that breaks the camel's back. A single text or a single photograh could cause us to collapse in on ourselves, and a voice message, video or phone call cannot even be contemplated let alone taken or acknowledged.

I have felt that and met a lot of friends on Vocal and talked with them about their issues and I always try to help, but don;t always get it right. I feel I have to be there for them, but also feel that they should not have to be there for me even though they are.

I think Social Media generally can put a lot of pressure on people although it can also bring people together and help them find the help that they need.

I always try to be there for anyone that needs any help and support, but am also sad and upset for the number of people that seem to have dropped off this social media no-so-merry-go-round, and I really miss them every day, but hope that they are coping and can smile a little every day.

The Social Media platforms provide us with a way to socialise and share with the option of dropping out when we need to.

When we are at work or physically socialising we don't often have the option to slow down, stop and take a rest.

Try Not To Get too Full

If you feel your mind is filling up and about to overflow, try to pull back. Ask for help, ask for advice but do not let your mind break its banks. See it as a glass or a bath, you switch off the taps before it fills or you may have to pull the plug to make sure that it doesn't overflow.

Rest and relaxation in any form that is right for you is a great way to make space within yourself to cope well with things in your life.

Conclusion

I hope this may have helped you a little and here are a few links that may be helpful to you if you are feeling under far too much pressure.

I agree that social media and electronic methods to contact one another can be wonderful and make you feel part of a community but it also comes with the pressure of always being available. Like you can want to be available all the time, but it's not healthy. I hope you're taking care of yourself, big hugs :)

  • I totally understand how it is to be overwhelmed as that is my default mood. Hope you feel better soon!
