The Limitation of Labels
Everything in life is labeled in some way. It starts from the moment of our birth. We are automatically labeled as male or female. We celebrate this with gender reveals and pinks and blues. It’s the way that we were taught and that’s the way most of us think that the world is. It’s true because that’s what the world does. From the second that we are born, we are put into a box and we are expected to stay in that box. But for some of us, we discover that those labels are uncomfortable. We go on with our lives and we continue to function in that box and even confirm that box. But there is more to us. We are scared to scribble outside of the lines. We are taught to care about what other people think so we come to the conclusion that we are stuck in that box.

To All Those Who Keep their Christmas Lights Up Through The Winter…Thank You.
The other night, I was driving my kids back to a school function at 5:30 on a country road in complete darkness. No moon, just my headlights in the pitch black. Periodically along my drive, I would see a few shining beacons of sparkling Christmas lights that would brighten up my otherwise dim ride. It struck me how nice it was to see those gleaming lights in an otherwise bleak and dispiriting night.

When I was a teenager, I was rather observant, and I would always watch the adults and how they lived their lives. The thing I remember reflecting on was that they weren't living very great lives, in fact, I realized they were actually living pretty awful lives, without intention, purpose, meaning or true connection with others.

Who are you?
It's funny how many of us do not know quite how to answer that question. Most of us give a short version of the answer. For many, this can feel like a loaded question. Sometimes the response requires a bit more self-reflection than one would like to admit. Truth is the majority of us do not like self-evaluation, especially in response to another individual. But what if this particular question was self-imposed? When was the last time you did an identity check? There is nothing wrong with a routine identity check-in.
