The Dangerous Rise of Andrew Tate: A Warning Sign for Our Society

Rise of Andrew Tate

Andrew Tate, a 35-year-old former kickboxing champion and social media influencer, is one of the most Googled people in the world. His hate-filled videos, which promote deeply violent and misogynistic attitudes, have been viewed over 11 billion times. Tate is a symbol of a dangerous trend that threatens to undermine the progress made in women's rights over the last century. His rise is a warning sign of the cancerous state of our society.

Tate's belief in the power of swords is a bizarre example of the violent and misogynistic attitudes that he promotes. He claims that if more men walked around the house with swords, most of the world's problems would be fixed. According to him, you can use a sword to assert your dominance over your wife and show her that you don't need a mask during the pandemic. Tate's faith in the home-sword is just one element in his abundance of deeply misogynistic attitudes.

As part of his online course called "pimpin' hoes," Tate reveals his technique for putting his girlfriends to work in his webcam business. He explains, "I am her everything… She has nowhere else to go." This is just one example of his broader mindset, which sees women as a means to an end. Tate views women as disposable objects to be used and discarded at will.

The fact that Tate has amassed such a large following is deeply troubling. It suggests that there is a significant market for misogyny in our society. Two-thirds of the Vice special report on Tate's rise and fall is dedicated to examining his business model and the noxious spew that he promotes. It highlights some of the grimmest lumps in his content. Just when you start to think that the programme is in danger of doing no more than mining the rich seam of horror this subject provides, the focus switches to some of the many women who have reported rape and personal physical and sexual abuse by him to the police.

The CPS declined to prosecute Tate on the grounds of insufficient evidence. This is a pattern that is all too familiar to many women who have experienced sexual violence. In the UK, only one out of 100 reported rapes result in a charge, let alone a conviction. Reported rapes are only the tip of a soul-destroying iceberg. Tate's ability to avoid accountability for his actions is a symptom of a broader culture that fails to take the issue of violence against women seriously.

Tate's influence is not limited to those who consume his content directly. The Vice special report also examines the women who have been indirectly affected by his influence. It includes stories of boyfriends who have become radicalized during their relationship with Tate's content, teachers who are concerned about the impressionable boys in their classes, and a 14-year-old girl who is on the verge of tears about all the horrible things the boys in her class feel able to say to girls.

The fact that Andrew Tate is one of the most Googled people in the world is deeply troubling. It suggests that there is a significant market for misogyny in our society. Tate's rise is a warning sign of the cancerous state of our culture. It is a symptom of a broader trend that threatens to undermine the progress made in women's rights over the last century.

The issue of violence against women is not limited to Tate. It is a problem that affects women all over the world. In the US, the reversal of Roe v. Wade threatens to roll back women's reproductive rights. In Afghanistan, the Taliban's ban on female education and contraception is a grim reminder of the need to protect the rights of women everywhere. Even in supposedly civilised, democratic countries, rape is often unofficially decriminalised.
