My Lonely, Not Funny Valentine
Anti-Valentine's day, otherwise known as 'frantically searching dating apps for a last minute date day' or 'I don’t even have enough friends for a Galentines day celebration day' is here again to bombard us with advertisements for cards and flowers. It is a particularly annoying holiday because it reminds me of my anxiety and depression that has left me struggling to connect romantically or even platonically with friends. However, music is the escape that distracts me from constantly thinking about being alone. Why? Because you get to live vicariously through an artists' mood whether it be pain, excitement, or freedom. After all music uplifts you.
Not Today, Cupid
Honestly, they should just start calling it 'Excuse to buy excessive amounts of chocolate' Day. Or maybe 'Forcing people to do something nice for their partner' Day. But maybe that's just me being a little bitter about not having a Valentine and remaining perpetually single for a good portion of my life. But, there really is something to the whole 'learn to love yourself' thing that everyone talks about, and sure, love is nice and cute and wholesome...but you're just as capable being happy on your own and celebrating that independence. And let's not forget celebrating the friends in your life with a little Galentine's Day moment.

It's the forced monogamy for me. Do we need an annual reminder of the fact that monogamous culture is status quo? There's no Valnetine for you this year as you just found out your partner has been going on multiple dates with other people you were unaware about.

Valentines is marketed as a holiday only for couples, something single people are supposed to loathe, but why? Why is it in our society being single is seen as an automatic death by loneliness endeavor. Yes it is totally okay to feel incredibly left out on Valentine's day, it is normal. But, loving yourself can feel so much more fulfilling. Part of loving yourself is understanding and coping with the deafening silence that is calling your name, “loneliness”. A great way to face that is with an Anti-Valentines day playlist. Everything Anti love and Anti mushy gushy. Personally, I love Valentines day. I love all of the hearts and pink. We all pretend for a bit that we are full of nothing but love. My music taste is pretty diverse, I enjoy songs with hard hitting lyrics and cool instrumentals. I believe music can be our outlets for any kind of complicated feelings we are feeling. My favorite way to listen to music is to blast it in the car and scream the lyrics that really embody the emotion I am struggling with. Music can be so important to me at times. It has helped me get through my toughest times. It has also helped me smile through my best times.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails". -Apostle Paul

Let’s face it. The concept of experiencing romantic true love is exciting and enchanting. And to be honest, love is the ultimate Universal language. If you think otherwise, you may just be lying to yourself. But if we’re discussing truth, we certainly cannot dismiss the fact that sometimes...most of the time...things just don’t work out with that “special someone”.

Dear Lover, What would it take to wean you off Valentine's Day? Bury the hatchet I used to love her, but I had to kill her I used to love her, hm yeah, but I had to kill her I had to put her six feet under And I can still hear her complain

So, whether your planning on partaking in Galentine's Day/ Singles Awareness Day, hating Valentine's because you're asexual/aromantic meanwhile indulging in whatever self-care activity such as a good bath, a box of chocolate, putting some makeup on from seemingly fit, Halsey's ANTI-VDAY collection, watching some Disney +, Hulu, etc., you're also going to need some good tunes to listen to that fit the anti-love vibe in your home. I'm here to tell you about those songs seeing that I already had an asexual/aromantic playlist but, can also fit if you're just not in the mood for love and/or breakup songs but, you're into romance and sexual feelings. The playlist is in a different order than this blog because I decided to try to group these songs in this blog by theming.
A Little(ish) Anti-Valentine's Playlist: PART 1
Compiled in conjunction with Vocal's Anti-Valentine's Playlist challenge, this selection of songs I've cobbled together herein runs the gamut of genres, artists, decades, and levels of lyrical and thematic seriousness. All of them are specifically assembled for one shared goal: to act as the antithesis of whatever Valentine's Day was ostensibly created to celebrate.

Love is one of those things we all want to experience and be in. We yearn for it, and once we get it, we realize it’s the most beautiful while still being the scariest as well. We sometimes even start a relationship knowing it won’t last, but the passion is so intense we think we can get through anything. We soon learn this is not always the case, passion and love are not enough. As you try to love your way through you begin to loose yourselves in an attempt at trying to love enough for both people. In these circumstances a great song says the things you feel and the sounds of the music and the lyrics of the song assist in he healing and helping us get through the pain. As we start to realize something is off, we start to detach to protect ourselves. A great song will pull those emotions out of you and in its own way help you to heal and realize what you are feeling. Sometimes we don’t have the words to explain it, but a song will hit the nail right on the head. Listening to songs like:

An Anti-Valentine’s Day play list can be inspired by many things or events. Unfortunately for me, my playlist is inspired by “the breakup” that really crushed me. Going through an intense break up, can really feel like the morning of a true loss. After all, it really is in many ways the death of what was, or what could have been.

Its a Sunday night bar pushing closing time, a bitter reminder of the inevitability of the blizzard outside. Spilled throughout the joint is a wide spectrum of Valentines playing out. A dry-humping couple; a young man with a rose in his breast pocket, frown on his face; singles, floating in the sea of the dance floor grab hold to each other like life preservers.
