Embracing my ethnicity Styling my hair is therapeutic and restorative. It is a feeling of peace and tranquillity that stays within my body while I am creating a masterpiece on my head. My hair styling journey did not start as a mindfulness practice, it was a useless attempt to tame my hair and conceal my blackness to look like the hair models on the shampoo bottle in my bathroom, who had long, straight, silky hair.

Coco boy and the chocolate cake
It was a hot and sweaty summer morning and the last thing I wanted to do was get ready for this wedding I was randomly invited to. I am not here to ruin anyone’s special day but imagine getting married with the love of your life, your sweetheart and honey bee and you purposely decide to invite me, Coco boy. Not because I am a special person in your life but because you wanted to thank me for making a cake, that I was going to get paid for at the end of the month, anyway. I imagine the couple would did such a thing because they felt bad for me, as I was an underpaid intern at a bakery I hate.

Moving to England during Brexit and learning how to sing
As an Afro Italian woman born and raised in Italy, with a mixed ethnic background of both Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo, the last thing I was thinking about was to randomly move to the United Kingdom, more precisely to a small, isolated, ethnocentric English village. I won’t mention the name because it is irrelevant in this story but what you need to know is that the difference between Italy and England is enormous and that there weren’t many choices regarding what subjects you wanted to study. I’d like to debate that the town is very posh, tidy and neat which is something I really adore. The school was of high rank in the county, however, it was the cultural difference between me and the people for me and most importantly the lack of desire most people in the school had to get to know a new person.

Being a production designer for a short film
A few months ago I was chosen to be the production designer for a short film written by a student and this is the most interesting and creative experience I’ve been going through since the pandemic swallowed our lives. My role is to create a whole new world with unique, meaningful and particular costumes and locations. I couldn’t be happier to be part of this as I can fully express my creativity and I can dedicate this part of my life to something I love doing.

I bought an iPhone 12 for £1 and now I’m broke
I must confess I’m not actually broke but I did suffer the consequences of my actions. My poverty mentality almost ‘killed’ me. I’ve been through it my whole life ‘Save money for the rainy days, take advantage of discounts and if there’s anything that costs less money… BUY IT!’ NO MATTER WHAT! This is a consequence of growing up poor and always being afraid of losing money. You want to get everything you can so in case you end up with nothing, you have a backup plan.

Pretty privilege in the animal kingdom
In a society that places high value on physical appearance, being considered pretty by the standards of society is a privilege that guarantees a better treatment in every aspect of your life such as work and school; it is important to be aware of the fact that we apply the ‘pretty first’ rule to animals as well.

A glass of merlot with a king
My beloved father rejected all the men that wanted to put a ring on my finger. He said, “they did not deserve my time so they should not become a part of our family”. As a result, before going on a date with me, the man would have to go through an interview process. The interview will let my father and I decide whether the man is worthy to be a part of our family. In my family, we mainly judge men based on their daily habits. This included the amount of showers they took, their meditation technique, their skin care routine, their weekly or monthly self-evaluation, the amount of books they read in a year, their house cleaning schedule and the way they treated others. We do not, for a second, believe that any man is not worthy as a human being, however, he must be worthy of my time, money, kindness, love, body and spirit. Unfortunately, most people are not. My only thought was that the date was not going to end up in marriage. I went on a date with Spiky Jerry, Boring Pablo, Weird Ali and Annoying Marco. Do not get me wrong, all these dates were not the worst, however, they did stupidly and naively try to catch my heart with the ‘I love black women’ narrative. They all kissed my hand and joyfully declared their love to me before I realized and was forced to tell them that we were not, in fact made for each other.

A comparison between a summer love story and the true love between Shrek and Fiona
A wooden puppet, witches, seven dwarves, a talking donkey, an ogre, a cursed princess waiting to be rescued and a female dragon. Every creature is different and coexists in a unique and fantastic world. Diversity is the key and love doesn’t seem to be discriminating. Shrek is the love story that we all love and I’m sure every person has seen at least one film of the saga.

International wig day was 10 March and you had no idea about it
Here’s your reminder that international wig day was the 10th of March and you missed it, yet again. A lot of you probably have no idea that this particular day in the calendar is reserved to wigs. International wig day is not just for the sake of wearing wigs and it’s probably not that famous because it’s been an international celebration since 2016, only 5 years ago!
