An Anti-Love Playlist for the Single Ladies
Ladies, raise your hand if you are single! I know it can feel very lonely at times and there are days when you probably think to yourself how nice it would be to have someone by your side. February 14th is the cruel reminder that none of us (Yes I am a member of your tribe) need denoting our solo status. Instead of jamming up in the holiday hype, I thought it would be interesting perhaps even fun to explore a different approach to Valentine’s Day.

In Portland, Oregon we are experiencing snow...and this city is not equipped to continue life as we know it in such conditions. As I went on an adventure in the wicked white fluff to get a workout, I couldn’t help but break out a couple of my favorite winter songs. Yes I was listening to Christmas music...don’t judge me! The melodic tones of Pentatonix and Tori Kelly singing Winter Wonderland/Don’t Worry Be Happy filled my ears as I strolled down the street. Making me feel strong and empowered because I did not let the snow stop me.

I'm recently single, So I was already hitting the break up songs when I found this contest and my inner monologue was like "ummmmmm YAS Queen"!!! I like to think that I have several different sides to myself (as do most Queens) so here's a sample of what them sides be jamming to these days…

Anti-Valentine's Day Playlist Valentine's Day is a sore subject for a lot of people, both single and in relationships. However, love, or the lack of it, isn't just subjected to this holiday. While a commercialized holiday about love doesn't help the situation, there is often an underlying issue or heartbreak that many are unable to heal from. The journey of my playlist will take you through learning and acknowleding our need for self-love and the personal lessons I've learned during my journey to finding it.
Dear Covid-19, Happy Valentine's Day (2021's Anti-V-Day Playlist)
This year one relationship we’ve all gotten into is one that none of us anticipated - intimacy with pain, sadness, worry, grief - with Covid-19. A year in, now, and none of us are untouched.

Is it sad that when I saw this challenge pop up, I already had a playlist ready to go to be posted? Valentine’s Day is a day I’ve never really cared about. Not in an edgy, anti-consumerism way, but simply just because it’s a day that doesn’t really resonate with me. It’s definitely one of those Marmite types of days - you either love it and spend the day romantically with your partner, or you hate it and spend the day wallowing in self-pity and anguish like myself.

I’m 24, and this year will be my, well, 24th Valentine’s day single. I’ve never been one to sit around and mope while everyone else is smelling red roses in candlelight...maybe because I actually don’t like roses and conventional “romantic gestures” seem really boring and anticlimactic to me.

There was a time I was anti-Valentine and unromantic. A time long ago. Before I met my wife, she reads my articles so I need to be clear about this. I'm absolutely not like that now, no way. I'm so romantic and in love you wouldn't believe it.

So you might have seen my other playlist that was about boycotting Valentine's Day by focusing on yourself in a feel good way. Well, this playlist is all about showing your middle finger to the whole institution by finding power in your singledom. And whilst I know the guys have their own problems and pressures associated with this dreaded day, this one goes out specifically to my ladies. To remind you that YOU are the main character. YOU are the badass queen of your kingdom.

I think it was Ernest Hemingway who wrote the mindful verses: "If my Valentine you won't be, I'll hang myself on your Christmas tree." Thus, let's dive into the holiday spirit; but please mind your masks!
The Lonely Hearts (and Proud to be!) Songs
Whether you have recently been through a break-up or are someone who has always disagreed with the commercialization of Valentine’s Day, then I have the playlist for you.
