The Fascinating Relationship Between the Heart and Brain

What is Coherence?

The heart possesses an intelligence of its own that's distinct, from the brain. It has an impact on our feelings, thinking, and interpretations. Interestingly the heart has the ability to anticipate and detect our responses to events even before they happen. Scientific research has validated the presence of a system in the heart which transmits a substantial amount of information to the brain impacting how we feel, think and sense things. Enough the heart actually sends signals to the brain than vice versa. This fascinating phenomenon is often referred to as the " brain in the heart " which comprises neurons of both short term and long-term memory as well as possessing extensive sensory capabilities. The communication between the heart and brain occurs in manner. As we experience emotions throughout our day our heart rhythm patterns tend to mirror our state. These patterns are closely monitored by centers in the brain that interpret them as feelings such, as fear, anger, joy or appreciation. When we are burdened with stress, worry, impatience or overwhelmed with information or indecision it disrupts our hearts rhythm leading to irregularity and chaos. This disorder then interferes with our system causing disruptions or "noise" that desynchronize neurons in our brain.

What is the meaning of coherence? Coherence refers to the synchronization, between your brain, heart and body. It represents a state of unity where all aspects of your being work together harmoniously. This state enables you to be fully present and aware. Moreover, when you achieve coherence your body can naturally. Operate at its best. There are advantages that come with being in a state including;

1. Enhanced creativity

2. Improved decision-making abilities

3. Clarity of thought

4. Emotional stability

5. Increased physical energy

6. Reduced stress levels

7. Better quality of sleep

Brain and heart coherence can be defined as the collaboration between these two organs. The brain and the heart. Working in unison with each other. This synchronization occurs when the electrical activity of the heart aligns with the brainwaves.

To comprehend brain and heart coherence it is essential to understand the system (ANS) which governs automatic bodily functions such as heart rate, blood pressure and digestion processes. The ANS consists of two divisions; the nervous system (SNS) responsible, for initiating "fight or flight" responses. This response is the body's way of reacting to stress. When the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is activated, it leads to an increase, in heart rate and blood pressure while slowing down the system. On the hand the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) triggers the "rest and digest" response, which's the body's natural way of relaxing.

When the PNS is activated, it results in a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure while speeding up the system. The SNS and PNS work together harmoniously to achieve brain and heart coherence. This coherence leads to an increase in heart rate variability (HRV) as better regulation of heart rate and blood pressure. There are techniques that can be used to enhance brain and heart coherence, such, as breathing, meditation, yoga, visualization and progressive muscle relaxation.

Consequently, when our mental functioning is affected, it becomes challenging to concentrate remember things listen effectively and make decisions. On the hand experiencing love, kindness, appreciation and compassion leads to coordinated heart rhythm. This rhythm has a harmonizing effect that promotes coordination, between the heart, brain and hormonal system. Not only does this result in a sense of wellbeing but also enhances our cognitive clarity. We become better at finding solutions making decisions and coming to logical conclusions. This state is known as facilitation which boosts our abilities. What's fascinating is that we don't have to wait for emotions to naturally arise in order to benefit from these advantages. We have the power to intentionally cultivate this uplifting state ourselves. Research suggests that actively nurturing qualities such as care, cooperation, forgiveness and more has an effect, on our overall coherence levels. This increased coherence equips us with resilience during times of stress and helps us maintain composure and confidence when faced with challenges. It demonstrates the wisdom of having a heart.
