Quitting Nicotine
It all started in 2017, I was outside near the garage and my brother was smoking a cigarette and he exhales and said " Try this, try this you'll love it!" My mind said okay and then I was hooked. My brother and I use to share cigarettes for awhile. A month later, my brother bought me a pack of newport menthol 100s and I hid them in my closet. My mom had no idea what was going on. Until she realized I was going for a lot of walks. When I came back from back from this one last walk, she asked " Why are you going on so many walks?' I nervously told her " Nothing just felt getting some exercise." That was a lie that I needed to cover for awhile. So about like a couple weeks went by she found something suspicious. One day I was out with friends and she went in my room and searched it and saw something. She went straight went into my closet and saw a lighter near my drawer and she looked in a shoe box and there it is, the thing I didn't want her to see and she finally found it. She asked me " So you smoke now just like your brothers?" I replied "Mom, sorry I gave in and and didn't have the power to say no".

The Power of the Laugh
I had a bully in the fifth grade that loved to pick on me. On more than one occasion I came home from school in a bad mood, falling to the couch, arms folded with a scowl on my face. “What’s wrong with you?” My mother had a way of not making a big deal out of anything. But she had a real pension for getting back at anyone that might dish out something she felt she didn’t deserve. And her revenge mode trickled down to her children and I could see her wheels turning.

Introduction
About the writer: I am a 21 year old college student at the University of Connecticut. Although I am proud of my accomplishments thus far, finishing up my last year in college with the current circumstances of the world has allowed me to take a step back and evaluate myself and those around me. What am I going to do next? How do I get there? When do I start? How do I start? Is it going to work out? It became clear to me that it is not just college students who are asking these questions. So many people have wanted to do things or have wondered if they have the ability to change their own life. There are always excuses- not having enough money, having bad past experiences, not having the confidence, too busy, and the list goes on.

Lightbulb Moment
Lightbulb Moment (Excerpt from my forthcoming book SOUL SEARCH'N) By defining D.A.D. I came to the realization that many people have a form of narcissism; judges, doctors, lawyers, politicians, celebrities, etc. I believe there is a little part of all of us who wants to be the center of attention; who wants to be in control. But even if it’s not narcissism we posses, perhaps, it’s egotism and the mentality that the world revolves around us; that’s the Damon in me, perhaps, in all of us. It’s an all about me attitude to the detriment of everyone around you. A deep selfishness that doesn’t know any other way to exist.

Being A Shorty
There was an article int the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Journal (April 15, 2004) written by Thulani Davis that talked about a recent study conducted by Motivational Educational Entertainment (MEE) where teens and young adults ages sixteen to twenty were interviewed about the heightened disrespect and open disdain for Black women. There was one paragraph in the article that stood out to me and made me realize that the issue of disrespect was not just an adolescent one but an adult one as well. The study refers to the teens as “the hip-hop generation” who are most likely children of the first “hip-hop generation” which is my generation. I know just as many men my age who have the same mentality as this younger generation because they were the first to have this “hip-hop” mentality and they have now passed this way of thinking on to their children.

Relishing Enforced Self-Isolation
Plagued with depressive pensive melancholy, over the years such emerged as the epitome of my solitude existence. Supressed by intermittent therapeutic interventions, melancholic moods were the source of a perverse comfort against a rising backdrop of paralysing episodic anxiety that dogged so many travels, and human interactions.
