Writing Restaurant Reviews

the Good & the Bad

Personally, I am what is considered a "Foodie" because not only do I love food but I also love sharing my thoughts about food with others. Which is odd because I no longer eat meat. Strictly a vegan or vegetarian menu for multiple years now. Dropping meat from my menu has helped me lose weight, lower vital bodily statistics, and just help me get around a little bit better.

There is one thing that I noticed with individuals who write restaurant reviews once they have visited a location. Nine chances out of ten you are only going to find negative reviews online. This is because people love to vent at the exact moment they are angry. This action not only releases the negativity from their body it also reassures them that they are saving someone else from that same negative experience.

What most people don't realize is that many people go online looking for positive reviews, not negative ones. Potential customers want to know the positive aspects of a restaurant so they know what to anticipate. Prospective customers want to know which restaurants are going to offer them a positive and fulfilling experience that encompasses good food! Keep this in mind when you are walking out of a restaurant and you want to share your opinion with others.

Below are a few points to keep in mind when writing a review on a restaurant.

Proofread your work. Whether you are going to write something negative or positive, make certain that you don't look illiterate in the process. Ensure that the spelling and grammar are correct. I often run my articles through a secondary source to read them for approval before I post anything online. Just to be on the safe side. This ensures that your words are not taken out of context.

Keep it short and to the point. There is no reason to be long-winded with your review. In all actuality, you can post in a bulleted format. Just list what you ordered, how long it took, how many were within your party, and possibly include the cost and cleanliness as well.

Be honest and fair. There may very well be instances where it is not going to be a five-star review. However, what you need to ensure is that you are being fair while at the same time being honest. It is actually recommended to wait until the following day to write a review. This ensures that you are no longer writing on emotion but rather on fact.

Specifications are key. It is important to be specific, whether it is a rant or a compliment. Don't be vague and just say that you were not happy or that there was an issue. Put your specifications in there and explain why you were unhappy. This is going to benefit many people, the owners of the establishments mainly. Once they read the review and realize the areas of improvement, then they can work on improving.

Pictures are critical. I repeat this over and over. Take pictures of the restaurants, the restroom, the plates when they are brought out to you, and the waiting area. Pictures are vital and quite often they explain more than what your review will. What you may see as an issue in a picture, another may not, and vice versa. You may think that something is ideal in a picture and someone else may not agree.

A huge point to take away when you leave a restaurant is the fact that many things have changed since the pandemic. The hours being put on waiters and waitresses, the cost of food, and even the cost of upkeep and renovations to the building. Within every area, there has been a change. And it has not always been a positive one. I beg of you to take this into consideration when you pull up to that restaurant, put your foot outside of your vehicle, and attempt to go have that "perfect meal". There is no such thing anymore. There will be issues; however, with issues there are resolutions.

Until next time, Kristina
