Large Cherry Almond Sharing Cake!
Of course, you probably know me very well for invading Vocal with my film studies stuff and articles entitled ‘a filmmaker’s guide’. I have often explained that I love to bake as well. Since I was young, I have loved the idea, the creativity and the relaxation of baking different things. I love to make macarons, layer cakes and gingerbread in particular and the activity of it really gets me away from my laptop (where I’m sure you know that I spend most of my life). So, I hope you enjoy me talking about what I bake and why I bake it complete with pictures (if not very good) of me actually baking, my baked goods in the process of being created and when they’re finished. I’m really happy to share this with you. And if you like, you can show me your baking (yes, I spend a lot of time writing, but I also spend a lot of time reading other people’s articles!), I would love to see it. Since I was in school, I was always interested in creating things, whether that be pieces of writing, welding things to make small statues or baking foods and making sweets (candy, if you’re American). I hope you enjoy looking at some of the stuff that has honestly kept me sane, because I seem to be going slightly mad.

Banana Bread
Banana Bread Ready in 1 ½ hours Serves~ 6 people I believe that recipes are guidelines, these can be switched and changed, I grew up with a very hard working mother, gone from morning to dark every day to support our family of 4. Yet she always had time to back for our school lunches. I miss those days, don't we all? The simplicity of being a child, where our only responsibility was to clean our rooms and put our laundry in the hamper. My fondest memories were of me and my mother, on sick days. She would wait until my two sisters were gone to school and me being the slow poke of her three girls, she would look at me and say, "You look sick." with a smile on her face. I remember the excitement, knowing what those words would bring. She would put on her vinyl, Loverboy, or Bob Segar, sometimes a bit of Red Rider, but most fondly I remember the Beatles, and crank the knob. Mouthwatering peanut butter cookies! My job was to press the fork into each one making tail criss cross markings. I remember the joy of opening my lunch box and seeing that shiny apple and those hand made cookies. It's a tradition I kept with my son. Who doesn't need a sick day here and there? Banana bread was rare in our house, we were on a budget and with three girls there were rarely any bananas left. But that thick warm bread with butter melting down our fingers still so fresh in my mind. It's a memory I hold so dearly. Now as I was saying above recipes are guidelines, change it up, add walnuts, or raisins, my partner loves chocolate chips in his. It's personal when we bake, these recipes are more than just recipes. They are words of love, personal gifts we give our children, family and friends. It's almost like magic, a pinch of this and a dollop of that, mix it up with a smile. Don't get me started on how it filled our homes with blissful smells that will stay with us for a lifetime. Food is for sharing, when you give someone food, it is saying I love you, and I want to give you something of myself.

Discovering the Magic of Abruzzo
In the heart of Italy, snuggled between the majestic mountain ranges of the Apennines and washed by the azure Adriatic Sea lies Abruzzo, one of the most authentic and green regions not only in all of Italy, but in the whole of Europe. Painted with swaths of stunning natural landscapes, uncontaminated vistas, and thrilling wildlife, Nature has created some of its best masterpieces here. From the rolling hills to the high plains overlooking verdant valleys, olive groves that harmoniously blend with vineyards, orchards, and colorful flowerings create a picturesque backdrop for the authentic, rural slow-paced life. Besides being a journey through one of the most pristine natural areas of Italy, the land of Abruzzo is also a journey to an enchanting world of strong warriors and saints. Each period has left a timeless and indelible mark. The medieval villages perched on peaks preserve the folklore, while impressive castles and remote hermitages set in the rocky mountainside have all survived through long centuries, existing in perfect synergy with the idyllic landscape.

Thanksgiving
This year seems a little different and kind of bittersweet for some going into the Thanksgiving holiday. The recent pandemic has forced families apart during this special time of year. That brings me to remembering how we would spend traditional Thanksgivings, sans pandemic, and sans CDC Guidelines of social distancing.

What to Eat in Mystic, Connecticut
I can’t believe that in eight years of asking people where I could go to the beach from DC by train, nobody’s ever suggested Mystic. Still, that’s remedied now, and I had a great time. The train journey itself was great – I love long train journeys, seven hours in this case – and it feels safe and relaxing in this 2020 year, with only every other seat booked and masks worn throughout (expect for eating and drinking).
