Cake is a sweet food usually made by baking a mixture of flour, sugar, eggs, butter/oil, raising agents and preservative. Cake is often served at occasions like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays. It is also served as dessert in some occasion. The type of occasion sometimes determines the type of cake that will be used that is a vanilla or red-velvet cake is mostly used for birthdays while a fruit cake is used for weddings. Cake can be made into different types (sponge cake, carrot cake, cheese cake, marble cake), flavors (vanilla, lemon, chocolate, strawberry), colors (red, blue, pink, brown) and shapes (square, hexagon, circle, rectangle) and sizes (which is measured in inches of the diameter 4”, 6”, 8”, 10”12"). It can also be decorated into any design which is mostly dependent on the occasion it is to be used for.

Baking a cake is pretty simple today especially with the availability of equipment. It can be baked in a regular pan (which is comes in various sizes, cupcake pan(comes as a single pan or as a tray) or foil plate (comes in small, medium and big size). And in a case where the baker does not own an oven, a cooking stove can be used.

One of the easiest cake to bake at home is the vanilla cake because it requires less strength, not so much ingredients and basic home tools can be used. The ingredients needed are 275g flour, 200g sugar, 250g butter, 5 eggs, 1∕4 milk, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon vanilla flavor and preservative (optional). The steps involved are as follows:

1. Mix the butter and sugar in a bowl until soft and the butter becomes lighter in shade

2. Break your eggs into a bowl and whisk until it is foamy

3. Add your eggs to the mixture and mix thoroughly with a whisk then add your flavor afterwards

4. Sift your flour into a bowl to get rid of lumps and any impurities

5. To the sieved flour, add your dry ingredients like baking powder, a pinch of salt (optional)

6. Add the wet ingredients mixture to the dry ingredients mixture and give it a good mix

7. Add the milk bit by bit and give it a last mix

8. Preheat your oven

9. Grease your pan

10. Add the cake batter to the pan

11. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 180 degrees
