I want to see if I have a career in writing and put it to the test
When did Race become political?
If the confederate flag is seen as “heritage” and not “hate”, then why is saying “Black Lives Matter” considered hate, not heritage by the same people? If all men are created equal, then why is it that a group of Black Lives Matter protesters can get pepper sprayed in D.C. for walking peacefully, while a group of White Nationalists can literally be escorted out of the Capitol
In the heat of the evening
The heat can make people see, do or possibly both of those things. I had just left a friend’s in the city. She mentioned how crazy people get in the summer because people tend to show more skin. I have noticed it before. I noticed the eyes of guys and girls ogling at a woman in a summer dress or women and men staring and lusting over a man with abs shirtless. People can’t control themselves in the summer. The weather makes people go crazy and explore their urges. I thought I was an exception until a late June evening.
Don't be a fashion whore!
Fashion is something that I have a passion for. It defines me as well as gives an appeal that I am that bitch. I fell in love with fashion when I watched Sex and The City and it made me want to learn more about the fashion dos and don’ts. I got my big break when I worked at Saks Fifth. It was like I was in one those movies like The Devil Wears Prada or Confessions of a Shopaholic. When I first worked at Saks Fifth, one of the best pieces of advice that I ever got was: Don’t ever wear more than two high end fashion designers at the same time. I never heard nor understood this. What was the reason? Well, think of cooking: If you put too much seasoning or add too much to a recipe, it can ruin the meal and have so much going on that you can’t enjoy the meal. Having too many designers on you is too much to handle. People wouldn’t know what “your style” is.
It's all in the braids
Hair is an important part for any woman. It defines us as well as provides an expression of how we want the world to perceive us. Some of us desire curly hair, some of us love beachy waves in our hair; some of us just go for usual straight hair. Either way, hair is not just an expression. Hair is art. Which is why different styles of hair can either cause a new trend or define a generation (the afro, mohawk, beehive, etc.). I learned that my favorite type of hair style is one where it gives volume, body and a silky shine.
A sister’s grit
Can you imagine having two kids AND getting your doctorates at the same time? Well, my sister *Mary did. Yes, there are people who can have children and work on their doctorate at the same time, but it is not an easy task. While Mary made it happen, her journey and struggles not only were difficult but showed me the true definition of what it means to have grit.
When the whole church seen my period
I was 13 years old so this happened like almost 14 years ago to the day. However, it was embarrassing on so many levels! Why?:
It all started with a Big Bang!
Can a show be both comedy and...intelligent? Well, I didn’t think that it was possible for a show to make me laugh but teach me something, but that occurred when I watched “The Big Bang Theory”. There were words that I never heard of and now I know thanks to TBBT (“coitus”, “bazinga”, “string theory”, etc.). If that didn’t sell it, there was also the catchphrase that was funny as well such as Sheldon’s line “I’m not crazy; my mother had me tested”. Finally, you had the amazing cast who made the show an incredible experience: Leonard, Raj, Sheldon, Howard, Amy, Penny and Bernadette.
What does “news”mean to you?
Is there something that makes you question why something is referred to by that given name? Have you ever had an interesting fact that while it may seem interesting to you but others might think, “Really”? Cue the eyerolls because I can hear them virtually, but I have an interesting fact about the news that might grasp some people. Ever since I was 10 years old, I always questioned everything or thought everything has multiple meanings or maybe just maybe, how did we call certain things by their name? How far do we question everything until it comes off as a conspiracy theory? Well, I mean I wouldn’t call myself a conspiracy theorist but I will say that I do few things have multiple meanings and I would love to expand my thinking.
