Fromm's Objective Happiness: A Critique of THE ART OF BEING
Erich Fromm's argument from an early passage [pages 3-4] from The Art of Being begins with an intuitively attractive distinction. Not every desire deserves to be called a genuine human need merely because it is strongly felt. A person may passionately desire cigarettes, domination, intoxicants, status objects, or forms of behavior that ultimately diminish rather than enrich life. Fromm therefore rejects the idea that happiness can simply mean the successful gratification of whatever desires happen to arise within us. Instead, he proposes an "objective" conception of human flourishing: some needs promote growth, self-realization, love, compassion, and fuller functioning, whereas others deform, diminish, or obstruct the person.
