Mental health advice to help cope with trauma
a article on advice for trauma
Mental illness can be very tough, especially trauma. When dealing with trauma we simply don't acknowledge that we are survivors to some of the most horrific things in life. We, as humans, can adapt to anything. We are built in such a way that we can develope the coping skills necessary to function through daily life and the problems we face. We learn as we go along how to avoid horrific situations and how to deal with it i the need should arise where we are faced with a tough situation.
We must remember that whatever we faced it is never our fault that we went through it. We must always remember that we are all innocent and that we have done nothing wrong.
We all experience trauma differently. Like in rape situations there are people who end up avoiding sex. Then there are some who have it accesively. With trauma with bullying there are people who become bullies to keep the trauma from happening again. Then there are others who may shy away from people to avoid being hurt again. So there are many ways people deal with trauma. There are some examples of dealing with trauma that may help as well.
1. Chanting a calming mantra- Mantras can be chanted by anyone even if you don't have a religion. You do not have to practice a certain religion to chant a calming mantra. I tend to make up my own mantras. One mantra I like to chant is " I put my trust in others." It is hard to do at first but the more you chant it the better you feel. You can also chant things like "I'm worthy of love." "I'm beautiful inside and out." and "I'm worthy of respect." These and other mantras you come up with will help set your mind frame to where you actually believe the mantras that you are chanting. You also do not need a mala. Just sit where you are comfortable and chant. You can even chant in your head when you are at work or at school.
Journaling- To best clear your head journaling either at night or in the morning is one of the best methods to getting rid of trauma. When you journal you do not need to be careful with what you say inside a notebook. When you write act like you are speaking to the person or writing them a letter in your journal. Say what is on your mind even if it is cursing them, telling them the same things they told you, etc. It is in a journal and getting out your emotions is better than holding them in.
Meditation- Trying to change your thoughts is sometimes a worse alternitive to the trauma you are experiencing. When you have these thoughts just let the thoughts come and go. When you meditate you can close your eyes and try to let the thoughts pass by your mind without fighting them or changing them. You can chant a mantra saying that its in the past or it isn't real in your mind if you wish.
Drawing- Stick figures is a good way to express what happened to you. If you wish to not write it down you may draw stick figures or draw a photo about what happened or the emotions inflicted behind it. It helps to get it out onto paper so you can assess what happened and maybe make some sense out of it.
We sometimes do not know reasons why these things happen to us and we tend to make excuses as to why or blame ourselves. It is best to realize it is the purpetrators fault and not your own.
