fresh snow and soft silence
I awaken at 3:30 in the morning, and the world is silent. It is late, or extremely early depending on your point of view, but it’s usually a bit louder on the street outside. I donned a sweater and pulled on some boots with a feeling of excitement in my stomach. The weather had predicted snow, but it hasn’t snowed here in two years, so I knew better than to get my hopes up. I stepped out into the frigid January air and I find myself elated. It had snowed, and in fact was still snowing. A couple of inches at least. I breathe in deeply and try to catch hold of the magic that always comes with winter’s weather.

Savor
Staring at a grey wall. That’s what I was doing. That’s what I had been doing for hours, perhaps weeks. It felt like months. I’d memorized every crack, every undulation in plaster, every blemish in the paint, and still, the page in front of me stayed resolutely blank.

Media-less
This year, I’m off of social media. Cold turkey. All apps were deleted January 3rd, and I haven’t looked back. Okay I downloaded one app once for 2 hours because I sent out a customer satisfaction survey to my ex boyfriends for a PowerPoint night with my girlfriends. BUT THAT’S IT. And yes, I got responses. Eleven of them, to be exact. Only one rated me an 8/10 on the worst ex ever scale (10 being the highest). The rest gave me a solid 1-2. I digress.

Nat-You-re & Compass-I-on
Words, ideas, opinions, concepts… they fly in and out of the mind, some stay for a cup of tea, some let you have your cup of tea in peace. Some are insistent, boisterous, thorny, even violent; some are bashful, quiet, inconspicuous, almost imperceptible. No matter how we try, our being human is Mawlana Rumi’s famous guest house, in a constant state of flux, either following or resisting the tide. One day you’re at your best, the next you’re in a slump.

On My Nerves
I can feel my leg burning as I slowly wake. My head is resting on my boyfriend’s chest. Fire blooms inside my right hip and thigh and spreads down my calf. I am desperate to put it out, but something blocks my attempts. There is heavy pressure on my right hip, fanning the flames and igniting my nerves into an inferno of pain. I am still half asleep as I reach for the troubling mass leaning against my leg.

Why Real Work Is The Key To Success
There is no one formula for success. You can achieve a million different levels of success in a million different ways. Yes, success is subjective, and it varies from person to person, but I’m not here to argue about different philosophies and what success means to different people.

New Year. New Me. New Start.
New Year. New Me. Fresh Start. Or that is how the saying goes. I, like many others, join the same cult every year only to disappoint ourselves within a short frame of time. Whether it be a day, a week, a month. I envy those who stick to their new perspective and outlook on life and get on with what they want to do. They succeed, and to those on the outside looking in, it seems effortless. This in turn leads me into telling myself off, getting annoyed and frustrated at my own lack of motivation and drive, and ultimately giving up on any goals and wishes I had when the New Year began. I fail. Every. Year.

Reso... what?
I kicked resolutions in the ass many years ago. I kept on exploring changing this or changing that, only to fail miserably a few weeks later (if I even managed to last weeks and not days). No, resolutions seemed more like a made up marketing trick to get us to join gyms, eat certain foods, buy certain goods… just changing habits without actually believing that we were capable of change.
