A Rose By Any Other Name
Imagine this. You have just endured something that has left you in pain, possibly physical, but at the very least, emotional more than anything else. You've maybe told some people about your experience, or at least, whatever you have been able to process into word form, and more than likely the responses you have received either address the physical pain primarily, or barely addressed the emotional pain as well as you had hoped.

"At Least You're.." and Other Tired Comfort Statements
"Well, at least you still have your other children!" We have all been witness to--and probably guilty of using--a phrase like this when comforting someone who has suffered in some way. If there is some population which has had the most grief when it comes to being comforted, it is, in my opinion, those who have lost a loved one, in any capacity and are simply asking for some amount of validation that their feelings make sense. Although, I will say, my time as a therapist has taught me that this happens to anyone reaching out for help with their suffering, which speaks to a problem we should probably be working to fix as a society.

A Promise in a Pear Tree
My parents both died when I was young in a collision with a drunk driver, on their way home from a dance recital I begged them to come and watch. I never had to beg them to go anywhere, really, they both supported me wholeheartedly no matter how long my lack of self confidence kept me from truly excelling at what I thought I could accomplish.

Death By Chocolate
The lights in the room had almost all been turned off, which was an odd sight to Detective John Moore. In the corner of the room was a small nightstand, with a lamp supplying the only amount of light in the entire room, and a few items John fond peculiar.

The Now or Later Principle of Pain
Why do people become dependent on alcohol? What is the draw to substance abuse or dependency? How does a person come to the decision of sacrificing health, stability or other necessary securities for the sake of a momentary pleasure?

Maslow's Hierarchy (of Suffering)
Ok, so we're going to start this one with a teachable moment here. In the world of psychology, there exists what is known as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and over the years since it was created it has been a successful tool in gauging what parts of a person's past are still lingering in the present, specifically in terms of what "needs" they currently have and what needs may not have been met when they were younger.

The Problem(s) With Grief and Loss
So here we are at part 4 of the series on suffering, and, although I had planned on publishing articles on one or two other subjects on the matter prior to this one, I can't help but reflect (currently sitting in my therapy office) on grief and loss and the way it has made its way into my conversations with the clients I see, whether that was the reason they came to see me or not.
