Good stress can help overcome delicate situations or "first times" like speaking in public, going on a first date, or making love with someone for the first time.

Bad stress, on the other hand, can have very harmful effects on health and well-being. Finally, when there is too much stress, it is never good.

It is customary to say that it is useless to stress about something we cannot control. And it's true!

So, stop stressing about things you cannot control.

Above all, know that there are solutions to overcome stress if you are willing to put in the effort. And honestly, it's tiring to always want to control everything, isn't it?

Understanding Stress: What It's About

Stress manifests as a form of tension – physical or mental – that leads to a very unpleasant feeling of discomfort. Do not confuse good stress with bad stress.

Good stress is what we may feel when preparing for a happy event like a big birthday party, a wedding, or a trip. Bad stress is what puts your physical and mental health at risk.

There are symptoms that can help identify a situation of stress. For example, we can mention:

  • Decreased or increased appetite,
  • Tension,
  • Weight imbalance,
  • Sleep disturbances,
  • Physical pain (headaches, backaches, stomachaches),
  • Decreased energy,
  • Irritability,
  • Desire to isolate oneself and avoid others,
  • Desire to cry and feelings of sadness,
  • etc.

One can also mention short-term stress states.

Of course, just because this type of stress is temporary doesn't mean it's risk-free. It often occurs in situations such as work overload, a disagreement with someone you love, or an overflow of everyday little annoyances like delays or traffic jams...

One thing is for sure: stress cannot be controlled by abusing alcohol or taking drugs.

Tips to Stop Stressing about What You Cannot Control

The first thing to do if you want to stop stressing about things you cannot control is to take a step back.

Ask yourself if you can do something that can have a direct influence on the thing that stresses you. Often, you stress about things that are beyond your control, so if you have no way of controlling it, you are stressing unnecessarily because your stress won't change anything.

Learn to detach yourself from what you cannot control. If you have no control over it, let it go, and don't let stress overwhelm you.

Focus on the positive aspects of your life. Create distance.

Engaging in physical or sports activities can greatly help combat your stress. Whether it's yoga, running, cycling, or any other activity that allows you to get some fresh air and release pent-up energy.

You can add meditation to the mix. Meditation allows you to work with your breath. If you meditate every day, even for just 5 or 10 minutes, you will see that it's effective against stress.

You should meditate in an environment and at a time suitable for it. You should be able to relax or at least reduce your stress through meditation. Another tip: for example, if you are in your car, stuck in traffic.

You may feel stressed. Yet, traffic jams are one of those things you absolutely cannot control. Either you have an alternative route to avoid the congestion, or you have to be patient.

To help you with this, take a deep breath and exhale deeply, 3 times in a row. You'll see, it will calm you down significantly. You can do this exercise in any stressful situation where you have absolutely no control. Gradually, you will learn to stop stressing about things you cannot control.

Furthermore, do not underestimate the stress-relief power of your social circle. You surely know someone, in your family or in your circle of friends, whose company you appreciate and who doesn't make you feel stressed. Don't hesitate to spend time with that person (or those people if there are several) to help you combat your stress.

It's a great tip to spend time with someone (or people) who never make you feel stressed. Conversely, avoid people and situations that add stress to your life.

You too, do something that brings you a good dose of satisfaction and well-being.

Engage in an activity you enjoy or indulge in your passion or try something for the first time.

Think about doing good for yourself and multiplying the sensations of well-being and happiness for yourself.

Go to a spa for a massage and pampering; visit an art exhibition; help someone in need; etc.

The essential thing is that you focus on everything positive in yourself and around you.

A Bit of Organization to Anticipate and Manage Your Stress

Sometimes, you may experience recurrent stress states.

It may be a moment before your period or anything that can happen and recur every month. With a little organization, you can anticipate and manage your stress.

In a notebook and/or a calendar, you could note the dates and times when you feel stressed.

If you know the reason, write it down. Gradually, you will see at which moments these stress states occur, and you can anticipate and reduce or even eliminate them.

To go further, you can even detail each stressful situation, specifying in writing in your notebook, the reason for this stress, what you felt precisely (physically and mentally), how you reacted in this specific stressful situation, and what you did to get rid of this stress (e.g., the 3 deep inspirations/exhalations, meditation, an activity you enjoy, etc.).

Talk to people around you. Avoid isolating yourself. If you don't feel like talking about your stress to everyone, choose one or two people who have a positive effect on you and who, above all, can listen and support you. Do not talk about your stress situations to people who will only add to your stress.

Pay close attention to your diet. What you eat has a direct impact on your physical and mental health. Therefore, if you eat poorly, you are inviting stress. Whereas if you adopt a balanced diet, you will find it easier to combat and get rid of bad stress.

The same goes for sleep. It is extremely important that you get enough sleep to reduce the appearance and intensity of stress. If you sleep little and poorly, you will often be subject to stress because your mind will not be clear, and your body will be tired and vulnerable.

When you succeed in anticipating and/or managing your stress, congratulate yourself. Do something to reward yourself, like buying yourself a new piece of clothing or having your favorite dessert, or anything else that pleases you.

Now, keep it in moderation.

You should not treat yourself every time you manage to chase away your stress. Do it at first to encourage yourself, but the goal is for you to achieve it naturally and systematically in the long run.
