Urban and rural attitudes are different

City dwellers demand the environment suits them, Country people adapt

Urban areas particularly Cities, are places where the environment in which the people live, is adapted to suit the needs and comfort of those people. Everything from the homes, workplaces and the infrastructure between them, is “forced” on to the landscape to make human life in that city more acceptable to those humans. Exposure to the natural elements is controlled by covered shopping malls, air condition and central heating in homes and workplaces.

Rural areas are places where people adapt to the environment they live in. They accept dust in the summer and mud in the winter, they choose clothing that enables activity, rather than try to roof over the fields and hedgerows. They do not view the “outdoors” as a playground but as a place of work.

In cities everything is designed around the human inhabitants, everything is made to conform to the desires and wishes of people. Even the parks, green spaces, are manufactured, controlled, designed to meet the wishes of people.

Rural communities design their lives to suit the land they live in, and the work they do on that land.

This is why there are 2 different bases for the mindsets that direct the way people react or plan to deal with every aspect of life. There are a huge number of individual variations and combinations of the two basic attitudes. Each human is unique and so each person’s experience of life combined with childhood conditioning and education, leaves them with a slightly different mix of urban and rural thinking. This mix changes in each individual over time, as life experience shows that the indoctrination they received during “education,” was directed at an explicit view, one held by the educators.

Politicians, and the media, only care for the urban areas, because that is where most consumers and voters live, but they should always be mindful that one size does NOT fit all, they must accept that urban thinking is not the only way of thinking.

Conflict arises when urban people venture into rural areas and demand that their needs for entertainment and pleasurable activity be met. They expect the rural people and environment to be changed to meet their needs. This is their basic mindset, that everything must be adapted to meet their wishes. In rural areas it is the people who adapt to the conditions, they do not demand conditions adapted to provide their comfort.

We have disruptive protests about environments issues, but it appears these are organised and carried out by urban based and urban thinking people. They want laws and rules changed to deal with their particular narrow view of what the environment is. Rural thinking knows that the environment is the sum total of every aspect of life. They care about pollution, but they know seasons come and go they accept that climate (the weather) changes and they adapt to meet those changes, they know the futility of trying to force the environment to change just to suit them.

Humanity needs to recover some rural thinking and standards. Before the industrial revolution, agriculture and the land it used, were the strength, stability and power, in every nation. That power was often abused, just as modern computerised industrial power is often abused by global marketing, giant businesses.

The vast increases in population, in every nation, precludes a return to having old ways of agriculture, there are just too many people to feed. But there needs a change away from the pure city thinking, which insists that all is adapted to human needs. We need to move towards a more rural way, where humans adapt to the changing conditions and the every-changing environment and climate. In other words we need to learn to cope with these changes, not make futile demands that it is the conditions that have to change.
