Drinking milk before going to bed at night seems to be a familiar thing for many people. Milk not only helps you feel calm and relaxed, many studies have found that drinking milk before going to bed has positive effects.

However, drinking milk and consuming dairy products regularly at night also causes many side effects on health.

Many people have the habit of drinking a glass of milk at night to help them sleep better.

What is the effect of drinking milk at night?

According to Healthshots, Dr. Deepali Sharma, a clinical nutritionist at CK Birla Hospital, New Delhi (India), said that drinking a cup of warm milk before going to bed is a long-standing habit of humans and this also brings many potential benefits.

Helps sleep well

Milk, along with other dairy products, is a source of tryptophan, an amino acid known for its sleep-promoting properties. Tryptophan acts as a precursor to the synthesis of both melatonin and serotonin in the body. Melatonin, often referred to as the “sleep hormone,” ensures that the sleep-wake cycle is controlled, increasing the quality of sleep at night.

In addition, serotonin functions as a multifaceted neurotransmitter that not only contributes to mood regulation but also plays a key role in appetite control, sleep regulation, and pain perception.

"The combination of these molecules creates a peaceful, soothing feeling, helping you to have a peaceful sleep," the expert commented.

Tryptophan’s benefits extend beyond sleep regulation. Your liver also uses this amino acid to make niacin, an essential component of the vitamin B3 complex. Niacin also helps with energy metabolism and DNA synthesis, supporting essential body functions.

Skin care

According to First Cry Parenting, drinking milk regularly can improve the condition of the skin by giving it a youthful appearance. Milk contains vitamin B12 which can help prevent loss of skin elasticity and infuse collagen which gives the skin a radiant appearance.

Vitamin A present in milk can promote new cell formation and help fight various skin diseases, making the skin radiant and flawless.

Reduce stress

Drinking a glass of warm milk before bed is an effective way to relieve stress. The protein lactium in milk can calm the body by lowering blood pressure, relaxing muscles, and reducing levels of cortisol, a hormone released by the body when under stress. Lactium can affect brain receptors to help control stress and anxiety.

Drinking milk can help you relax, reduce stress and sleep better.

Who should not drink milk at night?

While sipping warm milk may help you sleep better, it may not be suitable for everyone.

Factors such as individual tolerance, dietary preferences and overall health should all be taken into account when considering the timing and amount of milk consumed before bed, adds Sharma.

People who want to lose weight

Drinking milk at night is a good idea if you want to get a good night's sleep but it is not good for people who are trying to lose weight.

According to nutritionists, drinking milk at night can slow down digestion and affect liver function. This process affects the body's metabolic rate and can lead to fat accumulation and weight gain.

Regular milk consumption also contributes significantly to your daily calorie intake, which can lead to weight gain.

Drinking milk at night can even trigger insulin release due to the carbohydrates present in milk, potentially disrupting your body's circadian rhythm.

Women with hormonal changes

Women are generally advised not to drink milk at night if they are experiencing any hormonal changes. Drinking too much milk can cause blood sugar levels to rise by activating insulin growth factors, especially in those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Some studies have found that milk contains small amounts of various hormones, including progesterone and estrogen, which can cause hormonal changes and worsen this problem in women.

Experts recommend consuming milk and dairy products to absorb the nutritional value of this food but in moderation.

Additionally, you need to get enough other nutrients like protein and calcium so that you don't experience any deficiencies even if you cut down on your milk intake.
