Why Is Silence So Incredibly Noisy?
Thrilling Thursday Edition

There is a universal law of nature that scientists have spent centuries ignoring, too preoccupied with smashing atoms together to notice its profound effects.
It is this: The harder you try to be quiet, the louder absolutely everything becomes. This phenomenon is familiar to every human being who has ever attempted to sneak through a sleeping house, regardless of age or circumstance.
It doesn’t matter if you’re sixteen, tiptoeing to avoid waking your parents, or sixty, simply trying to make a cup of coffee before everyone else wakes up; the mission is always the same: be quiet! Being quiet… Simple enough, until your own house decides to declare war.
You wake up before everyone else and think, "I'll just slip into the kitchen, pour a cup of coffee, and be back before anyone even knows I was awake." That, inevitably, is the last intelligent thought you’ll have for the next ten minutes.
You slowly reach for the bedroom doorknob, a fixture you’ve opened thousands of times without a sound. Yet the instant someone is asleep, it unleashes a CCCCCRRRRRREEEEEEEEAAAAAAAKKKKKK that seems to echo through the house.
Excuse me? Where the hell did that come from? This door has apparently been storing the kinetic energy for years, waiting for the exact moment your success depended on silence. Now you're standing there frozen, staring at the door like it just betrayed state secrets. You continue down the hallway, only to enter another landmine zone… Floorboards ‘O’ Plenty!
Every family has that floorboard... The one that squeaks. It has always squeaked, as long as you can remember. You know exactly where it is. You've memorized its location over the years and know exactly how much pressure sets it off. You confidently step around it... and an entirely different floorboard announces itself with a loud POP! “Really!?? There's more than one now?" Outstanding… At this point you're no longer walking through your home. You're navigating an obstacle course designed by a sadistic architect with an excellent sense of humor and an ear for the cacophonous!
Now you've finally reached the kitchen. Victory is within sight. You carefully pick up your favorite coffee mug with both hands, as though you're transporting a priceless museum artifact. You place it gently into the sink. Not drop it. Not toss it… Place it. It responds with the tiniest little... TINK. "HOW!?" How does something so small sound like someone ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange? You instinctively look down the hallway to see if anyone stirred. Nobody has... Yet.
The coffee itself is easy enough. Until you decide to rinse out your mug. You slowly turn the hot water handle, and your on-demand water heater apparently interprets this as an emergency requiring immediate industrial intervention. Without warning... WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!
Suddenly your peaceful little kitchen sounds like the boiler room beneath a 1970s high school gymnasium. Pipes begin humming. Something deep inside the walls growls awake. You don't know exactly what machinery has activated, but you're fairly certain you've just helped launch a freight train. You immediately shut the faucet off and stand perfectly still. Silence. Complete silence. You find yourself wondering whether you should apologize to the house for some overarching shortcomings.
Then comes the cabinet. You barely touch the handle. You close it with all the grace of a concert pianist. You are convinced it never actually made contact. Especially since it has those miniature dampening pads on the edges. The little black felt pieces SPECIFICALLY designed for moments such as this. Nevertheless... KA THUNK!
It echoes through the kitchen like a judge's gavel. Somewhere in the darkness, your brain immediately invents the worst possible scenario. "They definitely heard that." "They're awake and staring toward the kitchen." "They're wondering why someone is remodeling the kitchen at six in the morning." The only person panicking... is you.
Instead of exacerbating the situation, you decide that maybe just leaving the house and getting some coffee at your favorite stop is the order of the day. Nice try… Here come the keys. Keys normally weigh about three ounces. When the household is sleeping, however, they instantly transform into medieval blacksmith equipment.
You barely lose your grip. CLANG! The sound ricochets through the house like someone dropped cast iron on a cookie sheet. Dogs in neighboring counties suddenly lift their heads. Somewhere, a squirrel falls out of a tree and starts chirping in your direction. You stare at the keys on the floor, offended. "They've never sounded like that before."
Mission accomplished. You’ve made it to the coffee shop and back, without any hiccups. Finally, you reach your room. You close the door behind you… Success! You take your first glorious sip of coffee. Everything is peaceful again, as it should be. The house is silent. Almost smug. As though nothing unusual happened at all. And that's when you realize the truth. The house isn't noisy. It isn't old. It isn't falling apart. It just knows… Every door. Every floorboard. Every cabinet. Every appliance. Every mysterious mechanical object hidden inside the walls. They are all members of an ancient organization dedicated to one purpose: Preventing anyone from quietly making coffee before sunrise. I imagine they hold meetings while we're asleep.
The floorboards clear their throats. The water heater checks attendance. The ice maker enthusiastically raises its hand. The chairman raps a tiny wooden gavel. "Ladies and gentlemen... tomorrow morning he'll try to be quiet again." The room erupts in applause. The door volunteers first. "I've been saving a squeak." The cabinet grins. "I've got a solid thunk ready and waiting!" The water heater proudly announces, "I'll sound like a coal-powered locomotive." The ice maker simply smiles. "No worries people, none of them are getting past me.”
So tomorrow morning, like every optimistic fool before me, I'll quietly tell myself I'm just going to make one simple cup of coffee. And my house... will once again remind me that silence has never been louder.
