Waiting Rooms: Purgatory with Magazines from 1997

Theremin Thursday Edition

By The Pompous PostPublished 6 months ago • 8 min read

Welcome, fellow time travelers, to the place where minutes stretch into geologic eras, where coffee is both free and a cry for help, and where every decorative fern has seen things it will never unsee. Today, we stroll bravely into Waiting Rooms… those beige vestibules of destiny, armed with nothing but a pen on a chain and a blood pressure of “why am I sweating, it’s 68°F in here?”

Exhibit A: The Aroma of Suspense (and Antibacterial Lemon)

Every waiting room has a signature scent… Industrial lemon with base notes of carpet cleaner and hauntingly hoppy notes of “someone microwaved fish in 2014.” If you’re in a medical office, there is always a hint of latex glove and the silent whisper of hand sanitizer, that somehow dries your soul more than your hands.

The lighting does the rest. Fluorescents buzz softly overhead, like bees looking for a home. A print of a sailboat reminds you that somewhere… out there… joy still exists. Not here. Not while Phil from Payroll is coughing the alphabet next to you. Why is Phil sitting next to you when there are 3 other seats available? Only Phil knows…

Exhibit B: The Clipboard Ritual (and the Pen on a Chain)

The receptionist: high priestess of the front desk, slides you The Clipboard. It contains forms last updated during the Reagan era. Sure, the font has changed to “Elite Prestige,” but you get the picture.

Questions include:

  • “Have you ever had an illness?” (Buddy…I hope you brought your lunch, cause you are going to be here a while.)
  • “Emergency contact?” (The doctor you are seeing, five minutes from now.)
  • “List all medications.” (Do flavored coffee syrups count? Since when is there a pop quiz before your “final” exam?)

You will write your name and birthday six times… all in the wrong places… in pen. You will check a box that says “I acknowledge I am acknowledging the acknowledgment.” The pen is attached to a chain like a medieval flail. It drags across the top of the clipboard, like Castellan being locked back in the dungeon for his 3rd escape attempt. It’s part of the shame… to shame you… with shame.

Exhibit C: The Seating Chart of Existentialism

Choose your throne:

  1. Vinyl Chair Row: Makes the same noise as a whoopee cushion every time you shift. Don’t you dare move now. No pressure.
  2. The Corner Seat: Safe from traffic, but you are now the official guardian of the dying Ficus.
  3. The Children’s Table: Bead maze. Sticky plastic dinosaur. A copy of Highlights that predates the moon landing and two wooden letter blocks that don’t match.
  4. The Directly-Beneath-the-AC Vent Seat: Ideal if your hobby is becoming a Popsicle.

Waiting room physics dictate that you will be called back the very moment you:

  • Take a sip of coffee
  • Open a granola bar that’s louder than tinfoil in a thunderstorm
  • Start the world’s longest text
  • Finally find Waldo

Exhibit D: The Fish Tank of Melancholy

Why do so many waiting rooms feature an aquarium with one surviving fish named Gerald? He circles, stares, and judges. The castle is covered in algae and broken dreams. There’s a sign: “Please do not tap on glass.” You definitely tap on the glass.

Gerald stares into your soul as if to say: “You think you’re waiting? Buddy, I’ve been here since the Bush administration… Senior. And yes, the treasure chest hasn’t blown bubbles since the first episode of Frasier.”

Exhibit E: The Television - A Hostage Situation

The TV volume is set to “airport.”

Programming rotates among:

  • Local news arguing with itself
  • Daytime talk shows featuring paternity tests and dramatic swerves
  • A medical infomercial for a supplement made of powdered hope

Someone always complains that the volume is too loud, then sits beneath the speaker. Someone else wants the game on. A third person is streaming videos on their phone at full blast because apparently earbuds are “Sorcery”.

Exhibit F: The Reading Material, Sponsored by Time Travel

Behold the magazine rack: a portal to 1997.

  • People: “Will Brad & Jen Last Forever?” (We dare to dream.)
  • Sports Illustrated: A pre-Y2K preview of “hot rookies to watch.”
  • National Geographic: An article on “the future of pagers.”
  • Good Housekeeping: A casserole recipe using eight cans of cream-of-something.

Someone has circled all the answers in every crossword. Another hero has cut out coupons for stores that no longer exist.

Exhibit G: The Wi-Fi Password That Does Not Work

A crumpled sign reads: “Guest Wi-Fi: WaitingRoom123!” It doesn’t work... shocker. You ask the front desk. They say, “Oh, it’s actually WaitingRoom1234 now.” You try again. The network blinks into existence, then vanishes like a cryptid in the night. There are outlets, but they’re at floor level behind an end table as heavy as an obelisk from Stonehenge. Your charger cord is 3 inches long.

Exhibit H: The Soundtrack of Anxiety

Waiting rooms are scored with curated audio chaos:

  • The Cough Symphony in C minor, courtesy of Phil.
  • The printer is performing its single, haunting aria.
  • The receptionist answering phones with supernatural calm: “Please hold.”
  • A wall clock that ticks in dog-years, making five minutes feel like a Ken Burns documentary. (It’s ok, we had to look up Ken Burns too)

Exhibit I: Subspecies of Staff and Patron

1) The Gatekeeper (Receptionist)

Smiles with the serenity of a lighthouse keeper in a storm. Scans your insurance card with a device that beeps like a cash register ringing up your future.

2) The Person Who Stands

Refuses to sit for unspecified reasons. Stares out the window like a ship captain watching for whales.

3) The Over-Sharer

Loudly giving their entire medical history over the speakerphone. You now know their cousin’s bunion journey in detail.

4) The Magazine Hoarder

Collects a stack of nine glossy artifacts as if building a paper fortress.

5) The Nurse Who Calls Your Name

Waits until you take that first glorious sip of coffee. Appears from nowhere. “Mr. Evans?” (Of course.)

6) The Late Arriver Who Goes First

They stroll in five minutes late and somehow get called immediately. You’ll spend the next week journaling about it and becoming a private detective to find out the “how and why.”

Exhibit J: Specialized Waiting Rooms (Choose Your Fighter)

Dentist -

Mint smell. Posters of teeth smiling like they know something you don’t. A tray of entirely too sharp thingy’s, glimpsed through a door. Slogan on the wall: “Relax!” (I will not.)

DMV -

Number system from Dante’s Appendix. You’re A093; they’re on B006. A child is playing Baby Shark on a loop. Time stops. Nations rise and fall. They call A094 because you had to use the restroom.

Auto Repair -

A coffee machine shaped as a lawsuit stares at you from across the room. TV is permanently tuned to a professional fishing or hunting show. A laminated poster of brake pads. Your mechanic comes out covered in grease: “It’ll be a few.” (It will not be a few… hope you brought snacks.)

ER -

You sit next to a man holding a ferret in a baby blanket. No one asks questions, not even you. A sign reads: “If you are experiencing an emergency, please tell us.” Everyone stares at it, unsure of the threshold.

Airline Gate -

Technically not a waiting room, but spiritually yes. A thousand rolling suitcases and one outlet, what could go wrong? The intercom is 70% static and 30% a man named Justin, asking for volunteers to gate-check.

Exhibit K: The Beverage Situation (Choose Your Regret)

  • Cone Cups at the Water Cooler: Hydration, but make it spillable.
  • Keurig Drawer of Mystery Pods: “French Vanilla,” “Dark Roast,” and one called “Hawaiian Sunset” that tastes like warm perfume.
  • Powdered Creamer: The only substance known to legally be both a solid and a gas.
  • Candy Bowl: Jolly Ranchers that have fused into a single geological formation.

The Laws of Waiting Rooms (Scientifically Verified*)

  1. Time Dilation Law: The last two minutes before your name is called last thirteen years.
  2. Snack Law: You are called precisely when your granola bar reaches peak crinkle.
  3. Bathroom Law: If you go, they will call you. If you stay, they will not.
  4. Proximity Law: The farther your car is parked, the sooner they’ll announce, “We need your insurance card again.”
  5. Phone Call Law: Begin an important call; immediately hear, “We’re ready for you.”

Viewer Mail from the Void™

Q: “Dear Pompous Post, the waiting room TV was playing true-crime while my dentist sharpened tools. Is this a threat?”

A: Legally they can’t say yes. Spiritually: yes.

Q: “The DMV called number B006, then B041, then a number that wasn’t a letter at all. Am I trapped?”

A: You’re in an alternate timeline. Your only escape is to bring them a photocopy of something they didn’t ask for.

Q: “My doctor’s office makes me check in on a tablet, then again at the desk, then again with the nurse. Did I join a loyalty program?”

A: After ten visits you get a free blood pressure reading and a sticker.

Q: “The aquarium fish followed me with its eyes the whole time.”

A: Gerald sees your soul. Be kind to Gerald.

Pompous Predictions™: The Future of Waiting

  • 2027: Magazines are replaced by iPads loaded exclusively with Candy Crush and a single PDF titled “We Value Your Feedback.”
  • 2030: Aquariums replaced by a livestream of Gerald now living his best life in the ocean (it is clearly stock footage).
  • 2033: Keurig machines gain sentience and unionize for better water.
  • 2038: DMV unveils a new queue system that uses quantum mechanics. No one understands it, but somehow you’re both first and last.
  • 2042: Doctors’ offices introduce “Pre-Waiting” - you wait at home first to warm up, then arrive to finish your waiting in-person for continuity.

Meditation for the Modern Waiter (Repeat After Me)

I inhale… the lemon-scented promise of progress.

I exhale… the sound of the printer’s sorrow.

I am a fern. I am a chair. I am a laminated sign that says PLEASE DO NOT TAP THE GLASS.

I will be called… when my granola bar is at maximum crumble.

Closing Thoughts from the Beige Frontier

Waiting rooms are the great equalizer. In here, CEOs and students, grandparents and toddlers, commuters and philosophers… we are all the same: mildly confused, slightly chilly, clutching a clipboard and a cone cup, pretending to read an article about “The Hottest Summer Looks of 1997.”

They are ridiculous. They are eternal. They are the tiny lobbies between us and everything we want: repaired teeth, renewed licenses, fixed radiators, and returned dignity.

So the next time you sit beneath the fluorescent prophecy and hear the cough symphony tuning up, smile at Gerald, sign your name nine times, and remember: the waiting is absurd… and you are gloriously alive in it.

Now serving: You…
