The Unwritten Rules of Grocery Store Parking Lots...
A Saga of Asphalt and Idiocy

Prologue: Lo, the Battlefield
Lo, do I see before me, a kingdom of cracked asphalt and faded paint. A field where the strong prey upon the distracted, where carts roll like tumbleweeds across the prairie, and where no mortal leaves unscathed. This, my friends, is the grocery store parking lot… the true crucible of modern society.
Forget Wall Street. Forget the halls of Congress. If you wish to see civilization as it really is, stripped of courtesy, grace, or logic, simply enter the HEB lot at 5:30 p.m. on payday. Here, thou shalt find humanity laid bare… laid low; hijinks and Tom Foolery abound.
The Commandments of Chaos
1. Thou Shalt Not Return Thy Cart
The first and most sacred commandment. To return thy cart is weakness. Nay, carts must be abandoned wherever the spirit moves you. Left perched on curbs, wedged into handicapped spaces, or released into the wild like steel buffalo, roaming the wide open plains. Anthropologists believe that cart return stations were built merely as ceremonial monuments, like Stonehenge.
2. Thou Shalt Claim Two Spaces
Even if thy carriage is a Prius, thou must straddle the line with all the might of an entitled Samurai Warlord. Think “Shogun” but with more Hondas. Pickup trucks, SUVs, and minivans consider this law not optional, but a birthright. To them, painted lines are merely “suggestions from peasants.”
3. Thou Shalt Idle Eternally
Why park when you can sit in thine car, engine running, blocking traffic, and scroll TikTok for nine straight minutes? The Idle Knights are a proud order… trained in the art of ignoring honks, while consuming chicken nuggets in silence.
4. Thou Shalt Cut Across Diagonally
Why follow lanes when thou canst forge new paths, like Magellan with a Kia Sorento? Lines are for the weak. Diagonal drivers believe asphalt should be treated like the Oregon Trail, complete with unnecessary wagon wheel ruts and dysentery.
5. Thou Shalt Engage in Mortal Combat for Front Spots
Nothing fuels the warrior spirit like spotting an empty space near the doors. Two drivers lock eyes. Engines rev. Only one shall prevail. The other must circle the lot for eternity, cursed like Sisyphus with a rattling shopping cart that veers to the left.
The Tribes of the Lot
The Cart Wrangler (Mythicus Herdus)
Behold the lone figure with the neon vest, wrangling 73 carts at once like some cowboy of chaos. They appear briefly, like desert mirages, and vanish again into the mist. Their battle cry: “Watch your ankles!”
The Spot Stalker (Predatorius Creepitus)
Drives slowly behind thee as thou walkest with cart in hand, breathing heavily, turn signal flashing. Will follow thee to the ends of the Earth, only to realize you were merely walking to return your metal steed to the corral. Thus, a passive-aggressive smirk and side eye of doom!
The Reverse Oracle (Backus Blindus)
Backs out of parking spaces guided not by mirrors nor mortal sight, but by prophecy alone. Their brake lights flicker. The future is uncertain. You either escape unscathed or become part of their bumper sticker collection.
The Handicap Space Raider (Illegalus Entitledus)
Bold. Unashamed. Parks illegally, utters the words: “I’ll only be a minute.” Legend says they will indeed be more than “a minute”… a cosmic minute, equivalent to seven shopping fortnights.
The Crosswalk Daredevil (Jaywalkus Clutchmypearlsus)
Strides into the lot without looking left or right, holding their latte aloft, like a torch of destiny. Aloofness, fanning the flames of their imbecilic nature. Their faith is unshakable: surely the gods will smite any who dare not yield.
The Ancient History & Lore of Parking Lots
Archaeologists have discovered evidence of Greco-Roman two-space chariots, their wheels straddling painted lines like colossi of arrogance. Scrolls from Mesopotamia speak of carts left adrift in floodplains, blocking oxen traffic for days.
Medieval peasants spoke in hushed whispers of The Jester’s Cart, a haunted trolley that rolled uphill against the wind. As if entranced by a spell from Merlin himself!
In 1297, Sir Reginald the Reckless was excommunicated for diagonally cutting across a jousting tournament’s horse corral. His punishment? Eternal exile to the farthest row of the lot.
And in Scotland, legend tells of William Wallace himself shouting: “They may take our patience, but they’ll never take our prime parking spots!” before storming aisle 12.
Modern Atrocities
1) The Thanksgiving Turkey Rush:
It begins at dawn. Shopping carts clatter like war drums. Frozen birds fly from shelves as if launched by trebuchet. In the parking lot, spots are seized with the fervor of invading armies. “FOR THY STUFFING!!” the villagers cry.
2) The Christmas Ham Siege:
Snow falls. Horns blare. Minivans collide like battering rams. Elders duel with canes over peppermint bark, while SUVs blockade the lot like medieval moats.
3) The Pumpkin Spice Insurrection:
Every September, chaos returns with pumpkin spice lattes. The lot fills with hooded acolytes chanting, “One more for the road!” The Cart Wranglers retreat until December.
4) The Electric Charging Station Wars:
Lo, the battlefields of Tesla and Prius braggarts. Plugged or unplugged, chaos reigns supreme. Battle cries of, “My battery is but 2%!” while others sip kombucha smugly and reply, “thou art doomed…. Muhahahah!”
5) Pickup Order Confusion:
Behold the Oracle App, declaring “your order is ready.” Tercels circle like lost pilgrims in the wilderness. Employees wander with crates of yogurts, searching endlessly: “Lo, I say… whose Honda Civic is this. Harken unto me!?”
A Survival Guide for the Doomed
- Park in Exile - the farthest corner of the lot, where no mortal dares tread. Yes, you’ll walk an extra 37 steps. Consider it cardio.
- Carry Binoculars - spot the faint glimmer of a reversing taillight before The Spot Stalker claims it.
- Offer Sacrifices - toss a broken shopping cart wheel into the cart corral to appease the gods.
- Abandon Hope - know that the laws of man and nature do not apply here. Only chaos and folly.
- Bring a Bard - should you fall, let someone sing of your deeds: “Here lies Noah, who once honked bravely at a Toyota Corolla. Yet fell at the battle of Dragging-lot.”
Epilogue: The Eternal Lot
And so we come full circle. The grocery store parking lot is not merely asphalt. It is a crucible of human folly, a proving ground of patience, a place where time bends and manners evaporate like spilled milk on blacktop.
Lo, this place shall endure. For as long as man desires bread, milk, and discounted rotisserie chicken, there shall be parking lots filled with idgits.
So take courage, noble shopper. Stand tall with your receipt fluttering in the wind. Push thy cart with valor, even as it veers inexorably left.
For they may take our sanity…
They may take our tempers…
But they shall never take… our Aldi membership cards!
