Murphy Has You on Speed Dial (And He’s Not Leaving a Voicemail)

The Pompous Post™ - Where the universe laughs, and we file a complaint.

By The Pompous PostPublished 4 months ago 9 min read

There are people in this world who float through life untouched by the universe’s cruel little pranks. Their toast lands butter-side up, their headphones never tangle, and they’ve never once stubbed their toes on a table leg… And then… there’s you.

The Chosen One. The Cosmic Punching Bag. The MVP of Murphy’s Law. If something can go wrong, it doesn’t just go wrong around you; it sends a formal RSVP, books a limo, and shows up with a brass marching band. Murphy has your number, saved in his favorites list. When the universe wants a laugh, it doesn’t check out a comedy special; it just streams one of your Mondays.

Exhibit A: The Itch of Doom

Let’s start with the simplest cruelty known to man: the unreachable back itch. You’re minding your business. You’re hydrated. The day is going okay. And then… it happens.

That one itch. That pinpoint itch. A molecular bullseye dead center between your shoulder blades. The sacred patch of flesh your arms can never reach. Unless you're able to pop out a shoulder, like a deranged Cirque du Soleil contortionist.

You try the shirt rub against the doorframe. You try the awkward T-Rex arm scritch. You even consider asking a trusted friend, but do you have any idea how weird it is to say, “Hey, could you just… get that spot… a little to the left… no, not there, that’s my kidney”?

Meanwhile, Murphy is in the corner, filing his nails, whispering: “Yeah… that’s it… Create those highlight reels!”

Exhibit B: The Great Glasses Betrayal

Glasses owners know. You polish them with a special microfiber cloth like a jeweler restoring a crown. You tilt them toward the light, and they gleam like angel wings. You slide them onto your face, ready to gaze upon the world with HD clarity and dignity. And there it is.

A smudge the size of Rhode Island. Right in the middle of the lens. Not off to the side, not something you can ignore… oh no. Murphy ensures it’s perfectly centered, like the cross-hairs of a sniper scope. Chaos ensues, and Murphy chuckles. So you clean them again. And again. And again. And somehow… the smudge gets bigger and moves off the other lens.

Somewhere in the shadows, a greasy fingerprint demon high-fives Murphy, as the DVR your live-feed.

Exhibit C: Hot Coffee… And Porcelain

Morning coffee. Your one moment of peace before the world remembers your address. You pick up your favorite mug. That mug’s been with you through breakups, existential crises, and several suspiciously undercooked Hot Pockets. You trust that mug. But today… not so much.

Today, the handle is roughly the temperature of Mount Doom. Low and behold, when you set it down on the stove to grab a bear claw, you had no idea your significant other had just used that burner to make eggs. Now you’re juggling it like a clown at a Renaissance Fair, trying not to end its existence on the floor. The mug survives. Your dignity does not.

Exhibit D: The Door Handle of Humiliation

Push. Pull. A simple binary system. Civilization has thrived on less. And yet… You confidently march toward the door. You PUSH. It PULLS. You PULL. It PUSHES. The door wins. You lose. An elderly man behind you whispers, “Amateur.”

You could’ve been a surgeon, a spy, or a genius inventor. But in that moment, you’re just the fool who lost to a rectangle.

Exhibit E: The “Silent” Microwave Assassin

You hit STOP before the beep. You beat the system! You’re living in the future, and it was done quietly... Your (late-night/early-morning) snack is done, and so is the container it was in. By some miracle of science, the cuisine has been heated to perfection, but the container it was in has started to smolder feverishly. Like Bear Grylls signaling his rescue chopper. This has, in turn, alerted the smoke detector…

You’ve caused the cat to have an aneurysm and jump sideways up the wall. You’ve woken the rest of the house, and the neighbors now know you’re reheating mac and cheese at 2:17 a.m.

Murphy chuckles softly into his latte.

Exhibit G: The Charger Conspiracy

Phone at 3%. Charger in hand. Salvation. You plug it in. Nothing. Wiggle. Nothing. Flip. Nothing. Flip back. Now it works…

How is it that USB cords obey the laws of neither physics nor decency? How is it that they only work when you’ve already accepted electronic death?

Murphy’s response from his beige La-Z-Boy: “Classic.”

Exhibit H: The Toast Law

This is a sacred covenant between breakfast and chaos. You drop a slice of toast. Statistically, it should have a 50/50 chance of landing on either side. But Murphy’s Law guffaws at statistics. YOUR toast will land butter-side down every single time, ensuring the floor enjoys the breakfast more than you do. Bonus points if you’re wearing socks and step on it. Barefoot? Murphy’s favorite… “Welcome to the party pal!”

Exhibit I: The Itch-While-Holding-Something

There’s a unique kind of torture when your nose itches right when you’re carrying something fragile, covered in barbecue sauce, or on a ladder.

One hand occupied. One nostril under siege. The stakes have never been higher. You intend to overexert one of your arms momentarily to relieve the formication. Silly… so very silly. Have you learned nothing?

Exhibit J: The Cleaning Cloth Kerfuffle

You’re wiping down the counter; the kitchen island, the sacred altar of domestic pride, when you notice something peculiar. It’s spotless. It gleams like a freshly waxed luxury sedan in a car commercial narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Could it be? Have you finally achieved the mythical streak-free shine? You set down the paper towels like a seasoned champion and turn to admire your triumph. And there it is. Right in the center. A streak.

“Mother of Pearl!” you hiss, channeling a pirate who’s just consumed his last bottle of rum and he’s miles from port. You grab another sheet of paper towel. Fresh, unsullied, pure as new-fallen snow. You wipe again. The streak… mocks you.

Fine. Rubber gloves. A medium between flesh and surface. Surely science will prevail. You yard off half a roll, scrubbing with the desperation of someone who refuses to be bested by quartz.

But then… the streak multiplies. It’s had children. Possibly grandchildren and a few friends for a sleepover. You squint so hard your eyes could melt steel beams.

Murphy doesn’t need wars. He doesn’t need armies. He has you… creating a greatest hits album of failure in real time.

Exhibit K: The Mirror Mockery

You look in the mirror and fix your hair to absolute, earth-shattering perfection. A model could not rival your symmetry. Birds should be chirping. Angels should be handing out little scorecards that all read “10.”

You give yourself the nod. The universal nod of someone who knows they’ve nailed it. You walk out feeling like a shampoo commercial filmed in slow motion.

And then… You catch your reflection in a different mirror. This new mirror does not worship you. This mirror does not love you. This mirror is the harbinger of truth, and that truth is brutal.

Your hair looks like you lost a bar fight with humidity. “Where do the strands come from!!” heard by the neighbors in a 3 block radius. You run a hand through it in denial, but the mirror does not waver. It knows…

The bathroom mirror? A filthy liar. The hallway mirror? A merciless truth-teller. Murphy? Standing somewhere in the shadows whispering, “Runway ready my dear... MUHAHAHA.”

Exhibit L: The Carton Betrayal

You grab the milk carton. You pour a beautiful stream of liquid joy. But wait, not from the spout. No, it dribbles down the side like it’s auditioning for a modern fountain exhibit.

You pour more slowly. It still dribbles. You pour faster. It explodes. You scream a colorful metaphor into the ether. The only sound that can be heard across the stairs is the yell of “YAHTZEE!” by the Murph-meister himself. Just rude…

Exhibit N: The Notification Curse

Your phone is silent all day. Not a ping. Not a chirp. Not even a suspicious vibration from a scammer pretending to be your bank. Then… nature calls.

You shuffle to your porcelain sanctuary. You lower yourself into that most vulnerable of human positions. You exhale. A single, blissful moment of silence… a fragile peace treaty between you and the universe.

And then… it happens. BING... BING. BING. BING... BING.

Four texts. Three emails. A push alert from an app you forgot existed. A spam call from “Vehicle Warranty Center.” And somehow, an Amber Alert from a state you don’t even live in.

Your phone goes from Buddhist monk to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. The entire digital world has chosen this exact moment to demand your attention.

Murphy’s standing just outside the bathroom door, headset on, clipboard in hand, coordinating the chaos like a stage manager.

“Alright, push the spam text in 3… 2… good. Now drop the work email. PERFECT. Someone give him a FaceTime call, we’re LIVE, people!”

The universe doesn’t knock… It dings.

Exhibit P: The Toilet Paper Treachery

It starts, as all great tragedies do, with a simple miscalculation. You’ve answered nature’s call. You sit upon the porcelain throne, confident, secure, blissfully unaware that destiny has other plans. You reach for the toilet paper… and there it is: One. Single. Sheet.

It flaps gently in the bathroom breeze, mocking you like a villain in a Disney movie. Your options are few. Your dignity… hanging by a perforated edge. So you do what any self-respecting human does in such dire straits: you begin a partially naked game of bathroom Twister, contorting your body to reach the spare roll that’s just far enough away to feel personal.

Left hand on the vanity. Right foot on the bath mat. Left foot slipping on mat with no rubber backing. Your internal monologue is screaming, “This is how legends die!”

You finally snag the new roll and breathe a shaky sigh of victory. But Murphy’s not done. Oh no. He’s just getting warmed up.

Phase Two: The Paper-Thin Line Between Love And Hate

Not all toilet paper is created equal. Some rolls are soft and sturdy, the golden retrievers of the hygiene world.

And then there’s THIS roll. The kind so thin, it’s basically tracing paper. You look at it sideways and it disappears. You’re going to have to yard it off to be safe. One careless swipe and congratulations:

You’ve just given yourself an unscheduled proctological exam. No co-pay. No waiting room. Just you, regret, and Murphy somewhere in the distance cackling:

“He chose… poorly.” The universe didn’t invent embarrassment. Toilet paper did.

Final Words from the Pompous Desk

Listen, if Murphy’s got you on speed dial, you’re not alone. There’s a whole support group. We meet every Tuesday in a parking lot after someone accidentally double-booked the room.

But here’s the thing Murphy never counted on: laughter. Because when the door won’t open, your sock disappears, and your glasses betray you for the sixth time today… all you can do is laugh like a maniacal villain in a Bond film.

Because Murphy can control your toast. But he can’t control your comeback. 😎🫡
