DECODING THE SUBTLE ART OF TALKING TO OURSELVES...
A Pompous Post™ Investigation Into Why Humans Speak Out Loud When No One Asked Them To.

Emerging research, anecdotal evidence, and one very confused mailman have confirmed a stunning reality: People talk to themselves. Constantly. All the time. Everywhere.
In cars. In kitchens. In grocery store aisles. In bathrooms (the judgment-free zone). Randomly, loudly, confidently… as if the air itself requested an update. Some call it self-soothing. Some call it self-coaching. Some call it early-onset fill-in-the-blank.
Here at The Pompous Post™, we simply call it:
“The Human Brain Doing Human Brain Things.”
And today, we decode why this happens and more importantly, why the older we get the more we do it.
SECTION I: The Older We Get, the Less We Care Who’s Listening
The first major factor in talking to yourself is simple: Age.
Studies show that once a human crosses age 35, their internal monologue begins leaking out of their mouth like a faulty garden hose.
By age 55?
That hose is spraying noticeably more, and tightening the sprinkler connection isn’t working.
By age 65?
The internal monologue becomes public radio, broadcasting full volume, crystal clear, pretty much 24/7.
For example:
Younger You (age 20):
“Hmm, I’m confused.”
Silent. Respectful. Internal.
Middle-Aged You (age 50):
Out loud, to no one:
“WHAT in the ACTUAL hell was I doing??”
Older You (age 65):
Having an entire conversation with your keys:
“You little bastards can’t hide from me today, I got my good eye on you.”
No shame. No regret. Pure survival. This is not insanity. This is adulthood. Deal with it!
SECTION II: The “Deranged Life Coach” Hidden in All of Us
Every human has two personalities:
1. The External You
The version who interacts with society, tries to be polite, and pretends to know what quinoa is. (we had to look it up)
2. The Internal You
A gremlin of chaos, sarcasm, and emotional turbulence who blurts things like:
“WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT??”
“Okay… I’m losing my mind.”
“That was stupid. Let’s never speak of this again.”
“Did I come in here for a reason or was I abducted by aliens?”
The older you get, the more these two merge into a single entity…
…and then they start yelling at each other.
SECTION III: Loneliness - or Just the Need for a Competent Conversation Partner?
People say talking to yourself is a sign of loneliness.
FALSE.
Talking to yourself is a sign that everyone ELSE is unreliable.
Why talk to people when:
they interrupt
they misinterpret everything
they ask follow-up questions
they disagree
and you can’t yell “SIR, THAT WAS A STUPID OPINION” without consequences?
Talking to yourself means:
you get the last word
the conversation stays on track
you’re always right
nobody argues with you (unless you’re really going through it)
It’s not loneliness. It’s quality control.
SECTION IV: The Car - Humanity’s Private Debate Stage
Humans save their BEST self-conversations for the car.
In cars, people become:
political analysts
motivational speakers
investigative journalists
emotional trainwrecks
karaoke champions
and medieval war generals
People driving alone routinely mutter things like:
“Oh REALLY? You think that turn signal is optional, jack-wagon!?”
“You know what? NO. We ARE going to start working out Monday. Next Monday…”
“Okay what the hell was that noise? Did the car just cough?? That’s is all I need.”
These conversations happen at every red light in America. And the driver next to you is having the SAME one.
SECTION V: Self-Scolding: The World’s Oldest Coping Mechanism
One universal phenomenon:
Everyone talks to themselves after doing something stupid.
Examples:
Sending a text to the wrong person
Dropping your phone on your face in bed
Forgetting why you walked into the kitchen
Looking for glasses that are literally on your face
Turning on the wrong stove burner
Tripping on absolutely nothing
The response is always the same:
“You drinkin’ again?”
“Are you okay?? What was that?”
“Wow. My brain is deteriorating.”
“We’re not telling anyone about this. sshhhh…”
Talking to yourself is not derangement. It’s crisis management.
SECTION VI: The Self-Arguer - The Final Form of Human Evolution
Some people debate themselves. Out loud. With gestures.
They pace around the house like:
“No because HERE’S the thing -”
“…okay but counterpoint -”
“WOW, good job, genius, that made NO sense.”
These individuals are not insane. Well, for the most part… They are simply preemptively arguing with situations that haven’t happened yet.
Like:
a conversation with your boss
an imaginary confrontation in the grocery store
a future disagreement with your neighbor
an argument you’re pretty sure you’ll have at Thanksgiving
Humans rehearse conflict like Broadway performers. It’s in our nature.
SECTION VII: Talking to Inanimate Objects - The True Sign You’re an Adult
Talking to yourself is one thing. Talking to OBJECTS or PETS is the next level of maturity.
Examples include:
Talking to your malfunctioning vacuum:
“DON’T YOU QUIT ON ME NOW. WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER!”
Talking to your TV remote:
“Why… WHY? I press and you work, that’s the deal!”
Talking to your car when it won’t start:
“Don’t do this. Not today. I’m begging you.”
Talking to the fridge:
“Why are you making that sound?? What is that?? STOP THAT.”
Talking to a jar lid:
“You want to fight? Oh, we can fight.”
Talking to your phone:
“You autocorrect one more time… Go ahead, I dare ya, and see what happens!?”
This is not madness. This is adulthood with sound effects.
SECTION VIII: Talking to Technology - Because It’s Asking for It
Self-talk skyrocketed once modern technology started acting like a drunk raccoon in the walls.
People talk to:
printers
microwaves
smart speakers
voice assistants
touchscreens
WiFi routers
dishwashers
ANYTHING with a battery
Most common phrases:
“WHY are you doing that…”
“WHAT do you WANT from me??”
“No. NO. Not today.”
“Okay, okay… let’s try it again but NICE this time.”
And technology always responds the same way:
(silence followed by malfunction)
SECTION IX: The Whisper-Talker in Public - Masters of Stealth Insanity
A quiet but hilarious group: People who talk to themselves quietly under their breath in stores.
They wander aisles muttering:
“Do we need foil? I don’t remember needing foil.”
“…why is this $8?? Who do they think they ARE…”
“Okay focus. FOCUS. You need Q-tips and a toilet brush.”
“…why did I walk down this aisle… what the hell?”
Every grocery store has 14 of these people at all times. Even the employees at times.
🔥 SECTION X: The Full-Send Self Conversation - When You’ve Completely Snapped
Let’s be honest. Every human has had at least ONE day where they talk to themselves like they’re arguing with a hostile restaurant manager.
This is the moment when you open a cabinet, everything falls out, and you scream:
“OH COME ON. SERIOUSLY?? IS THIS MY LIFE??”
Or when you stub your toe and yell:
“OUCH! SON-OF-A…..GREAT. GREAT. WONDERFUL. FANTASTIC. I’M HAVING FUN TODAY.”
Or when you drop something fragile and sigh:
“Yeah. Of course. Naturally. Why wouldn’t this happen today?”
If you’ve ever narrated your own suffering, congratulations!
You are officially one of the group.
FINAL SECTION
SO WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?
We’re human, we’re stressed and the world is ridiculous. Our brains constantly run updates like a glitchy Windows computer. And sometimes you need to shout,
“NEVER INTERUPT ME WHILE I’M TALKING TO MYSELF”.
Talking to yourself isn’t crazy. It’s survival. And honestly? It’s pretty cathartic.
So the next time someone catches you muttering to yourself, just smile and say:
“Don’t worry. I’m just having a meeting…”
