This microfiction is part of a series. In order:

The Bag; Jason's Dilemma; The Girl; Jason and the Girl; The Skewered Apple; Girl, Disrupted; Reward; Him; Master of the Games/The Guard; Discovery; Pursuit; Jason Remembers;

You may want to visit those first for context.

It was nothing much more than a peck, a brief touching of lips but Jason felt something pulse through him.

He pulled away from her, looking at her, startled by the sensation.

And then, chaos.

*

Ella watched Jason and saw the recollection of the evening dawn on his face. She felt elated but could tell that he had not made the leap between Catwoman and the girl with the bag - that they were the same. Until that had been established, there was still a barrier between them. How could she make him see? She threw her head back in annoyance, causing her form, manacled to the chair with Him, to jolt.

The rules of his engagement were so limiting. She needed to work out how to bypass them. If she could find a way to disrupt the Disruptors...but how could she, captured with her power dwindling? Jason was her only conceivable hope.

*

The kiss had ended and Jason remembered bright green eyes, with a sideways smirk visible below the mask. It was momentary because that's when the reverb began.

It started as an intermittent screech, causing winces on the faces around the bar. Jason grimaced and raised his hands to his ears. It was like the music was battling with a sound force, trying to regain control of the revellers. It was wearing but for Catwoman, her reaction to it was magnified in its intensity. The half-smile had vanished, replaced by pain mixed with fear. No hands over her ears but she was fixed to the spot, eyes darting left and right.

She looked hunted. And paralysed. Statuesque. Like Mr Tumnus.

Jason's ears roared. People were moving to get out, jostling and pushing past.

Jason shouted to her but she was unaware, not acknowledging him. When the noise became one solid tone, the music having lost, she collapsed.

He gasped but people obscured his view of her. It was a melée, as everyone rushed to escape the bar. He thought he saw someone rushing towards them both. But he couldn't get to where she was. He was a salmon trying to swim upstream.

When he was able to look again, she was gone.

So is this when she was taken or is this the beginning of it? Has he made the connection now? Where are the pursuers? Whose viewpoint do we see now?

Her reaction was different, there was already something afoot...

Yep agree - back to Ella… maybe a double instalment like a double firing on the apprentice!! Ha! You’re crushing this Rachel. And congrats on the leaderboard win this week too.

Was that a veiled reference to the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe? What a blast from the past! I’m all in for Jason, time for his eyes to open a squidge.

Seems strange that he could have forgotten such an event. I agree with others that Ella's perspective could be interesting now.

I’ve caught up on them all now that I have my true break from teaching but will just enjoy the ride for now. Fabulous series, Rachel!

Like the flash back to the night at the Skewered Apple! Maybe keep this ping pong between Jason and Ella going? Totally here for another Master of the Games installment too!

    Strong continuum.

You've crafted such a compelling story, whatever way you go will work out great!

  • I loved the line: ‘She looked hunted. And paralysed. Statuesque. Like Mr Tumnus.’ Poor Ella.🥺 I’m with Dharrsheena… maybe Ella’s viewpoint 🤔. I’m glad you have to work it all out 😳.

  • Well-wrought! Reverb becomes mind-blinding feedback? A special "disruptor" technique, a machine used by "men in black"? This explains his forgetfulness!

  • Okay so that's what Jason remembered. As for the viewpoint, how about Ella's?
