He liked to come down and look at her. She didn't know he was there. This one-way glass was the boon of the voyeur. He could spend hours there but he didn't because showing unhealthy obsession was undermining and he would not be undermined. He was too strong and determined for that. Although he would spend more time here, if he could, just observing and noting.

Watching.

She was slumped, exhausted. From what? He didn't know the extent of what she could do. This was part of the problem, the knowing or not knowing, to be more accurate. He was meeting the Master of the Games, for an update, who was tasked with her management.

He smiled to himself. She was a high prize! What an evening that had been when she'd finally been ensnared! He had celebrated with dormice for dinner. Such sweet little meats, dainty. A mere mouthful but appropriate in so many ways. Symbolic in this game of cat and mouse. A nod to the original game makers as a Roman delicacy. Mouse was underrated. People should get rid of their preconceptions. If only he could control them...

He frowned. Where was the Master? He should be here by now. He could feel his ire rising. Somebody would need to absorb it. Someone fat. They always made the most satisfying noise as your fist met flesh. Less impact for you too. He rubbed his fist. He liked them when they bleated. Fat people - the sheep of the human world. He omitted a whispered "Baa!" and let out a giggle.

There was a knock. He formed his face and turned.

"Come."

The Master entered, dressed in uniform, a sheen of sweat on his brow.

A thrill of excitement ran through him. Something was afoot.

"Something's happened. Tell."

"How perceptive," the Master gushed but stopped abruptly at his bad word choice.

Silence descended, scented with fear.

He collected himself. He wanted to crush but he wanted the news more.

"Speak. But be mindful."

The Master remained rigid, despite his relief.

"I've been monitoring her closely. Today, she appeared to someone."

"Where?"

"A train station."

He waited. It was worth it.

"It could be another."

So, is Jason a Perceptive, whatever that may mean and just doesn't realise it yet? Or is he something else, this conduit? Do we go back to Jason now? Or do we stay with "him" whoever "he" may be? Or do we go back to the girl? Whose perspective would you like to see? Maybe the guard/Master of the Games? And are these just Games or is there something more to this game of control?

Why is perceptive a bad choice.....

Very interesting!! And sinister too. I like both Dharrsheena and John’s suggestions! Although I’m kind of eager to hear more of Jason’s thread.

This made me think of the Hunger Games. It doesn't look like a safe, innocent game at all. I think I'd rather leave the big players for later and see what Jason may come up with.

Whatever Jason is, I think he should be a wild card, essentially out of the masters control but equally important out of ‘Hers.’

  • Ah, I thought maybe you were going in this direction, but didn't want to pre-empt it! I love the angle! Of course, I want to find out what the disruptors are up to, but I feel for the perceptives, so it's a hard choice as to who's story should unfold before us first. Usually, in stories like this, though, "the twist" can only favor either the antoagonist or the protagonist, so perhaps to help the perceptives along, I say let's get to know our enemy. Well-wrought, as ever!

I think some background on what the game is and its players is needed here. then we'll be able to better understand what's going on with the girl.

  • I’m with Dharrsheena: the guard/Master of the Games… a new perspective… Plus I sure as heck don’t like HIS perspective nor his appetites 😵‍💫… let’s avoid him & keep Jason & the girl safe!🥺

  • Hahahahahhahaha took me a moment to understand why perceptive was a bad choice of word. As for who's POV I wanna see next, I think I wanna see the Master/guard one because I think that would help me understand what's going on
