The day was drifting. Jason drank coffee and perused the article that he had found. It was brief and vague. It stated that a girl, Ella Smith, had gone missing. It didn't say if anyone was looking for her. It didn't say what had happened. There wasn't a number to call for information.

Ella. Jason could feel something pricking the back of his mind, insistently trying to make its way to the front. It was like he could retrieve it but something was stopping him. He wished the girl was here and could talk so he could just ask her.

The girl, Ella, was there, but with weakened power, she could not make herself seen or heard. She was watching and willing Jason to recall because once he did, like a valve, he'd open and she could use him. A connection would be made, a conduit established. It was risky to them both but she did not see that they had any other option. It was unlikely He knew about conduits. And this wasn't just about saving themselves; this was about something much bigger.

If he could just remember...

Time to look in the bag. He took out items he viewed as important onto the table.

The notebook. He would come back to that. At first glance, there didn't seem to be anything on further pages than the one he'd already looked at.

The purse. Leather, a simple zip. Inside, some coins: British, Euros; and a badge depicting the head of an old bearded man on the body of a strongman with "Survival of the Fittest?" in lettering over the top. Charles Darwin presumably. Significant?

He flicked through the book. Bits were underlined - no notes. The title: "Controlling Your Mind" by M. Loveridge. Some sort of self help book?

Then, receipts.

Two were for food. The third was a bar bill. The Skewered Apple! And it was at this point that Jason started to remember...

Interesting! Very curious about what memory the receipt has jarred free! And if the valve is opening, Ella will be back in play!

He remembers seeing the girl looking at him pleadingly as 2 men lead her from the bar, her lips mouthing “Help me.”

Maybe he starts remembering that he visited the Skewered Apple before? I wonder what's happened there?

  • Ella. I wonder if her name is short for Umbrella. Hahahahahahahaha sorry couldn't help myself 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This part felt not confusing at all to me and I'm so happy hehehehehe. Also, I wonder what Jason has started remembering.

  • Survival of the fittest... an interesting concept on Darwin's part, indicating that an organism's relation to its environment is more important than its relation to itself, insofar as survival is concerned, but what of the self? All the players in this game have their own self-interest except, it seems, Ella. What is she fighting for? Survival seems secondary to perseverence in her case. That may sound contradictory, but it often happens that one with superior strength must veil itself among the many as it awaits an appointed task, as some French double agents in Nazi-occupied France were purported to have endured. I can't find the name, but one was instrumental in getting Nazi specs to de Gaulle which were instrumental in the D Day invasion. He had to pretend to work for the Gestapo, was spit on by his own fellow citizens, then tortured and killed when the Nazis figured him out. Could Ella have such an ally among her captors that might drop Jason a hint, perhaps someone at the Skewered Apple? Well-wrought!
