From Thanksgiving to Every Special Occasion
"VEGAN GLUTEN FREE PECAN PIE" My dad and I being gluten free and sensitive to dairy has made my creative vegan-baker bulb flash above my head for years now. My most recent discovery and creation is my gluten free (GF) vegan, pecan pie!! It has somehow wormed its way into every holiday. Whenever I am manifesting a new recipe, I pull variations from multiple recipes from Pinterest to forge one of my own creations! And fair warning, I never use tablespoons and use household serving spoons or dessert spoons for my measurements! I tend to splash and dash things into the pie, so make your best judgement! *shrugging emoji*

One-Bowl Rhubarb Crisp. Top Story - May 2021.
Growing up in the rural Midwest, my family grew a lot of vegetables. Our garden, neat rows that easily spanned a quarter-acre, grew everything from tomatoes and potatoes to trellised grapes and row upon row of the sweetest corn imaginable. It was a lot of work, and as a kid, I’m not sure I appreciated many of the things my mother lovingly grew (and we begrudgingly weeded and harvested!).

Stunningly Decadent Vegan Layered Cake
This fluffy cake recipe takes me down memory lane, back to my childhood in Romania. In the area of Romania where I grew up, layered sheet cakes are the norm around holidays and special events. They can be cut in small bite-sized portions for guests and make for beautiful table additions for a large party.

A Diet Refocus
The April sun seemed especially strong. The dandelions had just appeared recently and were a beautiful, bright yellow. I hopped around the yard taking in the beautiful view. I had not picked my nest yet but knew this backyard would be a good place. There looked to be a nice garden at the east end of the lawn. Asparagus was already peeking through. I hoped there would be carrots later in the year. Hopping along the fence line, I found some tall grass that was going to seed and stopped to take a few bites.

Cabbages or Potatoes
For children growing up in rural Canada just after World War II, raised by parents who had barely survived the Depression and Dirty 30's it was a time of resourcefulness. I have been gifted with the legacy of a thrifty family of survivors. Both my mother and grandparents had an amazing knack for creating delicious meals out of almost nothing. With barely enough to feed their own 4 children my grandparents were also known for their generosity, feeding hobos and anyone within their reach that needed a hearty meal even if it was only cabbage soup or scalloped potatoes.

It's B A N A N A S.
I have always said, food is my love language. A year ago, I left an abusive relationship; one where they HATED everything I cooked or baked. I wore myself down making anything I could to make them happy with food and usually it ended with them throwing it in the garbage. After a while, I stopped cooking and baking completely; I stopped doing what I loved.

Vegan Pancakes
Every Shrove Tuesday here in the UK millions of children look forward to the annual intake of pancakes, not the sort of pancakes that are eaten as a breakfast treat, but heavy stodgy pancakes designed to fill the empty belly and satisfy the hungry child.

Must-Try Food Trucks Around Bangor, Maine
Although some people are apprehensive about food trucks, these will give even a four-star, sit-down restaurant a run for their money regarding value and flavor. What’s more, they’ll beat most hands down when it comes to quick delivery of meals.

Dietary Addictions
If you are as much of a foody as I am or at least if you enjoy the food network then I am certain you are aware of Washington DC’s plethora of fine dining, fast food, and vending truck options. Even if you are from the city, the shear volume of options can be as overwhelming as picking a movie or show from Netflix during an anxiety attack. Throw in any dietary restrictions or allergies that you or your family may have and finding a restaurant or choosing a place to order dinner from becomes internal panic. Luckily, I have done all the panicking for you. As city native and a person that is both allergic to milk and eggs. I have gone through all phases of grief in losing the ability to digest something. I grew up in a household where food was prepared with blood pressure and diabetic restrictions in mind, so I have a bit of insight. Many of us within these household where there are restrictions lies a few family members with no restrictions, so where do their options lie for dining. Again, I have done all the heavy lifting for you. As a native I have dined almost everywhere but that is not much relevant to you in this moment. You want to know where my family can eat if we visit the city tomorrow. This list is relevant to this very moment. All these restaurants are currently open regardless of the pandemic. If you adhere to whatever requirements, such as face masks or other protective equipment or measures you can grab a seat and enjoy. I know that you are wondering So, what makes me an expert? I have indulged on both sides. Although may allergies developed later in life, there were many digestive issues that I dealt with early in life as a child. I did not become aware that I was even allergic to milk or eggs until 2015 while enjoying an entire cheesecake to myself for my birthday, greedy I know but we all have our moments. That was the moment I stopped trying to eat what I wanted and started listening to what my body did not want in it. So, over the past seven years I have been in this city searching for safe, delicious options for my family and me. The first thing I did was perfect my in-home recipes and alternatives to know what great vegan, or non-diary meals taste like. If you can cook this transition is easy peasy. The hard part is taking your family out to celebrate or meeting friends for lunch because sometimes you just want to or must eat out. So, whether you have food allergies, dietary restrictions, or are just trying to eat healthier you may want to save it in your browser or grab a pen to jot down a spot or two to visit the next time you are in DC.
