Saturday night out.
A light hearted look at the pubs and clubs on a Saturday night in the mid-sixties. Saturday night in our house in the sixties was a bit of a free for all. With at least nine kids in the house it was a bit chaotic to say the least, especially on a cold and dark Winter evening when none of us could go out to play.

Forgot your PE kit again?
Those days of Physical Exercise. A light hearted look at PE in schools of the sixties. Two years ago I broke my big toe by dropping a cupboard door on it, it snapped in two and I was off work for a while, (about 8 weeks), now that toe has come back with a vengeance, I seem to have a touch of Arthritis in it which when throbbing is almost the same as gout.

The Garden Room
It was late January 2021 I was on my 44th week of lockdown and the house – even though I say so myself – was looking immaculate. Every little job that had needed doing had been done, even down to the wobbly loo roll holder in the downstairs toilet. I was feeling quite proud of myself.

Simply The Best
Being born in 1952 I really didn’t get to know my mother until I was about four years old. Although I can frequently recall her holding my hand or lifting me off the double-decker bus that took us into town. The one thing that does stick in my mind from all those years ago is how hard she worked. She was always the first to rise and always the last to bed. I can’t ever recall her sitting down and having a catnap or five minutes break. I do remember that she was always with child and I would have been fifth of six at that time, with the oldest being eight and the youngest 18 months.

Vegan Pancakes
Every Shrove Tuesday here in the UK millions of children look forward to the annual intake of pancakes, not the sort of pancakes that are eaten as a breakfast treat, but heavy stodgy pancakes designed to fill the empty belly and satisfy the hungry child.

The Killer
The hairs stood up on the back of my neck, I had just turned on Solid Gold radio and Matt Monro was singing ‘Walk Away’, it was a song that had always conjured up strong images for me every time I heard it, memories of Sunday and ‘Two Way Family Favourites playing on the transistor radio which sat on the windowsill of our kitchen, I sat back and could actually smell the roast beef and hear the vegetables simmering on the gas stove, I could see my sister sat there, her arm in plaster and all the messages written on the cast, and I remembered the Killer.

March of the Mods
The year was 1965, I was thirteen years old and I opened the box as though I were opening a chest full of jewels, Inside the thin layer of cardboard and hidden beneath a mountain of tissue paper were my first pair of Chelsea boots This was to be the first stage of my becoming a Mod (short for modernist) At the school I attended you were either a Beatles (Mod) fan, or a Rolling Stones (Rocker) fan, even though the Stones would early in their careers opt for the mod look, the point was that there was no in-between, you were what you wore when you clambered out of your school uniform and hit the streets. I opted for the mod look, even though I was a massive Stones fan.

The Christening
“We are going to be so late, are you ready yet?” “It’s alright for you, you didn’t have to feed two hungry children, you didn’t have to sort out a babysitter, you just swan in from work, shower and put a suit on and you’re done, just remember, I didn’t want this at all.”
