Purple Rain: 3:46
It was 1984. Mama and I were on our way to spend some quality time together at the movies. We had originally planned to see the movie “Bambi,” but I had a master plan. My 7 year old mind did not want to see an animation about a deer; I had already had my weekly cartoon fill on Transfomers, Smurfs, and He-Man. Samantha wanted to see a grown up movie, her first, about a man in purple. He wore ruffled shirts and had big, curly hair like the ladies at the beauty shop. As mama drove, I imagined our brown Firebird to be a “Little Red Corvette.” However, unlike in the song, my mom did not drive much too fast. Looking back, she was more like “The Slow and the Curious.” We cruised to the small AMC theater tucked in the back of our local Kmart and parked in front. I had rehearsed my devious, temper tantrum scheme in case mama said no to seeing the movie. As we approached the ticket booth and saw the showtimes, she began to request two tickets to Bambi when I nervously exclaimed, “Ma, I want to see THAT movie!” I pointed to the picture of the man with an intense stare on a motorcycle shrouded in semi-darkness.

I was 8 years old when I saw him singing on the tv. In my head, he looked like an angel and sang like one too. His smile was one you could not ignore and his eyes were piercing blue, and still are, and that’s to show how close to the screen I was.

I don’t even know where to start when I think about this band. Despite the fact my English was not at its best with 13, I took every word to heart and tried to memorize all of their songs.

mysoundMusicPublished 4 years ago in BeatAnne Reburn and Her Clones
No, this is not a review of a new science movie I just caught on Netflix, though it could have been, a few years ago, before the explosion in video technology and savvy which has created on whole new genre of music video now lighting up YouTube. Covers have been a staple of YouTube since it came into our lives in 2006, but now they're being done, of Beatles and Beachboy songs and records by slightly lesser known artists, by just one person, singing all the parts and sometimes even playing all the instruments. They're all always fun to see and listen to, but Anne Reburn's, with what she refers to as her "clones," are in a class by themselves. The handful that I've seen so far are just fabulous, on all kinds of levels.

Ghezal AmiriPublished 4 years ago in BeatCelebrity Crush – Elton John
It has been 50 years since that fateful day in my family living room when I first heard Elton John’s “Your Song”. Sitting in that brown Naugahyde recliner, I glanced at the “hi-fi” with wonder and awe, attempting to finish my sixth-grade homework. Who was this, and why was he so captivating? In a “Music in Review” documentary I viewed recently, a reviewer noted how “Your Song” was a “breath of fresh air” against all the other pop songs of the day, with Elton using a combination of sharps and flats that no one else at the time attempted. He described Elton as a “genre in himself”. The Beatles had broken up earlier that year, and the world … and I … were ready for the next musical genius. That’s the technical explanation, the left brain one. My right brain told this 11-year-old girl, “Oh, god, you must learn more about this man. He’s different. He made you stop and listen. He makes your heart go pitter-patter! He’s a musical magician.”
