Christian and Sonya are exiting the diner, and they are walking towards his car. Christian opens the door for Sonya and lets her in before closing the door. As Christian walks to the driver's side door, Sonya opens the door for him. Christian smiles with gratitude as he gets in the car.

On a cool day in late October, Steven and Doug are warming up on the track located at Montrose Beach Park. Steven starts setting up his Garmin watch. Doug is staring at two women nearby as they stretch and warm up. One of the women notices Doug smiling flirtatiously. She gently tugs the other woman's sleeve of her hoodie. The two women decide to leave.

Later in the evening, Michael is watching the news on television. Reporter- The Chicago Marathon has two brand new champions. For the men, it is Great Britain's William Davis, III. Davis, a former Olympic track star, has just made his marathon debut today and won by just 13 seconds over Kenyan legend Sarki Kipkosgei. Davis hung around the lead pack just before taking the lead for good at the 40th kilometer. Davis finished the race in 2:05:01. Nick Daniels, the top American male, has finished seventh overall. He finished in 2:07:43.

Months go by, and Michael is still unemployed. Bills are piling up, and they are covering the end table. Michael's apartment is a mess. Clothing covers the worn-out couches and the living room floor. The floor is also cluttered with empty beer cans and pizza boxes. The kitchen sink is full of dirty dishes. Gnats and houseflies fly around the apartment. The stench in the place would be unbearable. Michael has yet to bathe.

Michael wakes up in a hospital ward. The first two people he sees are his parents, Mitchell and Marsha. He is disoriented after finding himself on the hospital bed and with tubes attached to him. He attempts to take the tubes out of his nose and off of his body.
