art
All about women in the art world; famous female artists and subjects, and artwork with a feminist perspective.
Who is Marlene Dumas?
The experience of the woman in artist movements are often shared from the lens of a man. Men decide how a woman’s bodies should be in form, the acts that they perform, and the features to accentuate. It has been my experience that when women create art it comes from a deeper, more humanitarian space. We use art to balance the drill of our lives where everyone needs us. The outlet to soothe our traumas or in many art movements for artistic scholars the challenge to the male gaze.
SAYHERNAME Morgan SankofaPublished 4 years ago in VivaThings to remember, tattooed on my body (Part 2)
My tattoos are a part of me and they tell my story. Or a story. Depending which tattoo it is. I like to decorate my body to help me remind of good things in life or to give me strength. Like for example my back tattoo, that represents "Wonder Woman", my strength and femininity.
Jule JessenbergerPublished 4 years ago in VivaThings to remember, tattooed on my body (Part One)
"Are you sure you want a tattoo? That's gonna stay on your body forever!" - "Only criminals have tattoos." - "That wouldn't look very feminine."

Ever since I heard the first time about the Mexican icon painter Frida Kahlo, I fell in love and it’s been a few years now of intense admiration and fascination towards her.

When talking about great women, I can certainly name a few that inspire me; Amelia Earhart comes to mind, Georgia O’Keeffe, Princess Diana, another favorite of mine is Joan of Arc and then there is Mother Teresa.
Susanne Swanson BernardPublished 4 years ago in VivaWhy Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Work is Timeless
Over time, art has depicted history, changes in the world, society, economy, and emotion, amongst other things. As art is subjective and personal to us, the thought crosses my mind: “How does an art piece withstand time and still be appreciated in current time?” Art over time has depicted landscapes, moments in history, personal moments in our lives, and parts of different cultures, to name a few. Culture displayed in art is one of the most powerful results. Art and culture co-exist and work hand in hand, both positively and negatively. Art is a product of culture and culture is a product of art. Here is a bit of history on Jean-Michel Basquiat, why he's one of my favorite artists and why I consider his art to be timeless.

Artist • Tina Yu
Tina Yu, Chinese-American artist based in New York City, is fresh-on-the-scene she gained a following through talk between people in the art world. Once she began to expand she continued to paint and started to do sculptures on her canvases. I felt she was unique apart from other artists who do not sculpt or create solely by hand as much anymore. Our modern times are so into technology, graphic designing, almost all digital. Luckily for us, she's picked up the sculpting tools and gave us a whole new way of viewing art and creating art.
Shyria LashayPublished 5 years ago in Viva10 Art Movements Meant to Spread Feminism Awareness
As the feminist art movement began to grow during the 1960s, women used art as a tool to comment on social and political stances to further equality amongst the sexes. While women have always created and made successful names for themselves in the art world, it wasn’t until this era where their art was put front and center to further communicate art movements meant to spread feminism awareness.

Women in Art History
Ever since I can remember, art has fascinated me. It has always been part of my life, but I never thought about its history—how certain ideas and movements came about and what was the artist's inspiration. Now being a student of the arts, the opportunity to research what has always fascinated me has pushed me to find out the base of all my curiosity.
