Depression is a mental illness that causes people to feel sad and hopeless for long periods of time. It can interfere with a person's ability to work, sleep, eat, and enjoy life. Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States. Each year, it affects millions of Americans.

There are many different types of depression. The most common type is major depressive disorder. Major depressive disorder causes a person to have at least five symptoms during two weeks or more. These symptoms include feeling sad or hopeless, having low energy levels, losing interest in activities once enjoyed, experiencing changes in appetite or weight, having problems sleeping , and feeling restless or irritable .

There are many treatments for depression including therapy , medication , and lifestyle changes . Therapy involves talking with a therapist about your thoughts and feelings . This can help you understand why you feel depressed and learn how to cope with your feelings . Medication may be prescribed by your doctor if you have moderate to severe depression . There are many different types of antidepressant medications available . Lifestyle changes such as exercise , healthy eating habits ,and getting enough sleep can also help improve moods in people who suffer from depression.

What antidepressants are available?

There are many different types of antidepressants available on the market. Each type of antidepressant works differently in the body, and some people may respond better to one type over another. The most common types of antidepressants include SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, and MAO inhibitors.

SSRIs are a class of antidepressants that work by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain. They include drugs such as citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft). SSRIs are generally considered to be safe and effective for treating depression.

SNRI stands for serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. SNRI medications work by blocking the reabsorption or "reuptake"of serotonin and norepinephrine into nerve cells in the brain. This allows these neurotransmitters to stay active longer, which can help improve mood symptoms. Some common SNRI medications include venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine hydrochloride (Cymbalta).

They have been shown to be helpful in treating both depression and anxiety disorders .

Tricyclic antidepressants were some of the first antidepressant medications developed more than 50 years ago . TCAs work by blocking certain receptors in the brain that allow certain chemicals called monoamines , including serotonin , noradrenaline and dopamine ,to enter nerve cells Tricyclics can cause side effects such as dry mouth constipation blurred vision weight gain dizziness and confusion . However they still may be prescribed off label for milder cases of depression because they tend to be less expensive than other newer options .

MAO inhibitors are a class medication that was originally used for treatment resistant depression but is now also used off-label for panic disorder with agoraphobia Social phobia bipolar disorder PMDD posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) obsessive compulsive disorder(OCD) eating disordersand chronic pain

How do antidepressants work?

They work by increasing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are responsible for sending messages between nerve cells in the brain. When there is an imbalance of neurotransmitters due to factors like stress or illness, this can lead to symptoms of depression. Antidepressants work by restoring balance to these chemicals which helps improve mood and relieve symptoms associated with depression

Depression: What does the treatment involve?

Treatment for depression usually involves a combination of medication and therapy. Medication may include antidepressants, which help change the chemical balance in the brain, or antipsychotic drugs, which help control symptoms such as agitation or hallucinations. Therapy may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps people learn new ways to think about and cope with their problems, or interpersonal therapy (IPT), which helps people understand and work through relationships issues.

How effectively do antidepressants relieve the symptoms?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how effectively antidepressants relieve symptoms, as the effectiveness of these medications can vary from person to person. However, in general, antidepressants are considered to be quite effective at relieving symptoms of depression and other mental health conditions.

One reason that antidepressants are so effective at treating mental health conditions is that they work on the brain's neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow messages to be transmitted between nerve cells in the brain. When someone is suffering from a mental health condition such as depression, their neurotransmitter levels may be out of balance, which can lead to symptoms like sadness, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. Antidepressants work by restoring balance to these neurotransmitters, which helps to relieve symptoms.

Another reason that antidepressants tend to be successful at treating mental health conditions is that they come in a variety of forms with different mechanisms of action. This means that there is likely an antidepressant medication available that will work well for each individual patient. Additionally, many people find relief from taking antidepressant medications even if their condition does not meet the criteria for clinical depression diagnosis according.

How well can antidepressants prevent relapses?

One study, published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, looked at data from more than 1,700 people with major depressive disorder who were being treated with either an antidepressant or placebo. The study found that those taking antidepressants were much less likely to experience a relapse than those taking placebo.

Another study, published in the journal Lancet Neurology, looked at data from more than 2,000 people with bipolar disorder who were being treated with either lithium or another drug called valproate. The study found that those taking lithium were much less likely to experience a relapse than those taking valproate.

What are the side effects of antidepressants?

Antidepressants are one class of medication that can have serious side effects if not taken as prescribed by a doctor.

The most common side effect of antidepressants is nausea. Up to 75% of people taking them may experience this symptom at some point. Other common side effects include headache, drowsiness, weight gain or loss, and sexual dysfunction. Some people also report feeling agitated or anxious after starting antidepressant therapy.

In rare cases, antidepressants can cause more serious problems like suicidal thoughts or behavior, heart problems, seizures, and mania (an excessive state of excitement). Anyone who experiences these symptoms should stop taking the drug immediately and contact their doctor right away.
