90 million people pretend to be happy every day: the "depressive misconception" is crushing millions

Not long ago, I saw a piece of news:

An Internet user who had been suffering from depression for a long time finally plucked up the courage to tell his parents about his diagnosis.

Unexpectedly, waiting for the comfort of parents, but "long" criticism education: "you have to straighten up the state of mind, should do what, where the depression."

In our life, we often hear the saying:

"Why should you be depressed when your condition is so good?" "Just an excuse to be lazy and pretentious!" "Just get over it. Who hasn't been depressed?"

Such prejudice makes many people with depression suffer.

According to the World Health Organization, China has nearly 100 million people suffering from depression, but only 10 percent of them seek medical attention.

That's nearly 90 million patients who are oblivious to their condition.

But is depression really, as they say, just over it? Not really.

"Mental illness is also a real illness, with serious effects on the body," said psychologist Andrew in The Devil of Noon.

Depression, not terrible. The scary thing is that many people see it as a sign of weakness and twee.

Such a mistake, let countless depression patients lost the desire to help, struggle alone in pain.

"Shame" is the last straw for depression patients

Someone online once asked, "Why do most people with depression not want to tell people around them?"

Someone put it straight:

Because most people will think that you are not strong enough, too pretentious. All those distress calls you're trying to make, only to get hurt more.

In the CCTV documentary How Do We Fight Depression, a girl named Ziye has an impressive experience:

In the first year of junior high school, Ziye suffered from depression due to study pressure. She often felt overwhelmed by anxiety and fear.

However, when she told her parents about her illness, they thought she was just trying to find an excuse to avoid studying.

In their opinion, Ziye does not worry about food and clothing, can not be depressed.

As her parents talked more, Ziye began to doubt whether she was too weak and not strong enough.

She had to put on a mask of smile, suffering in silence and never opening her heart to others.

It wasn't until the third grade that her illness worsened and she transitioned into "bipolar disorder." That day, she cried and broke down at home, and her parents took her to the hospital.

When the doctor gave her diagnosis, Ziye was suddenly relieved. She was finally able to prove to her parents that she was not an affectation, but that she was ill.

Nowadays, many people still have deep prejudice against depression. In their eyes, depression is a sign of weakness.

When people around them pluck up the courage to ask them for help, they often get an understated reply: "No one is easy", "don't be so pretentious", "moan without illness"...

What they don't know, however, is that these biases are the final straw for people with depression. Let them fall into a sense of shame, lost the desire to live.

As Andrew says:

"Depression is a flaw in love. We are creatures of love, and we are bound to despair over loss, and depression is the mechanism of that despair."

Life is like this, there is no absolute fairness, some people shine, some people are in the dark.

But those who pass through dark clouds in search of glimmer should never be laughed at.

Depression is not twee, but sick

Not long ago, read a news, very feeling:

A girl in Chengdu was diagnosed with moderate depression.

At the moment of knowing the result, she hugged the doctor excitedly and said, "It's so good that I'm not as they say, hypocritical and lazy, but just sick."

The doctor could not help shedding tears.

In fact, happiness is not the most important thing for people with depression.

Having people around them who accept their unhappiness is the key to helping them out of despair.

In The Devil of High Noon, Andrew talks about his own struggle with depression:

For some time he suddenly lost interest in everything for some unknown reason:

Fear of phone calls, fear of seeing friends, fear of even eating, made him feel miserable.

All this did not make him realize he was suffering from depression. Because in his mind, he is too strong a person to be depressed.

Time after time he tried to escape from depression, but time after time it dragged him into the endless darkness.

One morning Andrew found himself in bed stiff and unable to move. In desperation, he picked up the phone and asked his father for help.

During that time, he felt like he had lost his life force and was living like a zombie every day. He even relied on his father to feed him when he was depressed.

Fortunately, his father did not blame him for his "negativity" and took it upon himself to take care of him.

Later, with the help of his father and doctors, he gradually came out of his depression and returned to a normal life.

"Depression," Dr. Andrew said, "is never simply pessimistic, negative, but from the psychological to the physical disease."

Depression is an illness that, like a cold or fever, cannot be controlled.

Even for the average person, it may be impossible to empathize with the pain of depression.

Please also keep a understanding, a tolerance.

Life is fickle and everyone may experience the darkest moments of life.

For depressed people on the edge of a precipice, any criticism can send them plunging into the abyss.

But those love and tolerance, is to help them break the "depression curse" key.

Facing psychological problems

is the beginning of getting out of depression

In The Devil of Noon, Andrew points out:

"Depression is not that scary. It can be cured. With active treatment, patients with depression can return to normal life."

If you know someone who is suffering from depression, tell them:

Don't be afraid. Don't give up. You are not alone.

① Express emotions in moderation

In life, we are often used to using positive energy such as positive, optimistic to ask themselves, so that they always maintain a stable mood.

As everyone knows, emotion is also a kind of energy.

If you have been depressed, control, it is easy to fall into a state of high pressure, have adverse effects on the body.

Learning to face up to your feelings, express them appropriately, and let your emotions flow properly is the best way to treat yourself.

② Keep exercising

Musician Xu Wei once fell into depression due to stress.

For a while, he felt like he was losing interest in everything. Even his favorite music was a source of pain.

Later, on the advice of his doctor, he began to take medication and exercise.

At that time, every day when he woke up, he would run straight to the park.

Because only after exercise can he experience a little happiness. In this way, he overcame depression through willpower and walked out of the haze.

Studies have shown that many people with depression lack serotonin, a "happiness hormone", in their brains. Making it harder for them to experience pleasure in the way that ordinary people do.

One hour of exercise a day, on the other hand, can significantly reduce the amount of cortisol in the brain and increase the release of dopamine and endorphins. Has a great effect on relieving depression.

③ Ask for help and company

According to the 2022 National Blue Book on Depression:

One in every 13 people around us may be suffering from depression.

Depression has become a very common disease, but we know little about it. There are even a lot of people who are depressed and don't even know it.

However, as with all other diseases, seeing is often the beginning of the cure.

When you realize that you or someone around you is falling into a "black hole of depression" and that your life is hopeless. Remember, this is just a lie told by depression.

Please don't be alone in the pain, do ask for help.

To know, depression is not a terminal disease, but a cold of the mind.

As long as the timely detection, active treatment, can drive away the darkness, welcome the midday sun.

Write at the end

There is a passage in The Demon of High Noon:

"People always think that the present reality is eternal, but the truth is, there is no season that cannot pass through.

We must learn to prepare for winter in summer."

We can't choose to be depressed, but we can choose to face depression.

When you or someone around you is in pain, tell them it's not forever.

Countless others have walked through this darkness. Believe me, you can too.

Don't cut down a tree in winter. As long as you take good care of yourself, one day, you will see the clouds after the stars.
