My BEST Life
Today is January 25th, 2021 at 6 o’clock in the morning. It’s still dark out and as I sit here in bed, eyes closed, I can feel a stirring whirlwind inside my chest. It doesn’t feel good. It doesn’t feel bad. It feels unknown...or maybe undecided. It’s an unsettled wind that was turned up by the hurricane of events that was 2020: a mixture of chaos, anger, and loss. A breakdown of life as we know it, leaving pieces scattered about. Over the past year I have been feeling disconnected, moody, and heavy. And when I look at all those pieces scattered about, I am acutely aware that whatever my life previously was, it wasn’t what I truly want, or need. It’s too busy, too messy, and too bogged down with STUFF. I’ve been SPENDING too much, EATING too much, and WASTING too much. All this time, money, and energy spent with little to show for it that I actually VALUE. But in these early days of 2021, there is a sense that, in some ways, a storm has settled. And as I take an internal survey, I can feel that in between the cracks and rough edges lies the answer: the little pieces of GOOD laying around. The little pieces of what I value and hold dear: my FAMILY and FRIENDS, my HEALTH, my love of NATURE and respect for the ENVIRONMENT, my CREATIVITY, my GARDEN. This is MY potential. This is my compass. This is my way forward in 2021. With this new air of possibility, I’m not going to rebuild my OLD life. I’m going to identify the most important pieces of myself and stitch them together to form my BEST life. A life where my day to day has PURPOSE and most of my steps are leading me towards the life I WANT to lead.

Complaining is so 2020
I had a cheerful group of friends. It was the highlight of my month to get together with this vibrant group of women to chat, enjoy a potluck, have a glass of wine. Then the coronavirus hit. When the world went virtual, we kept up the meetings via Zoom, and at the beginning, it was not that different; we still had fun. But then I realized I didn't want to join anymore. For a while, I thought it was my mood that kept me from wanting to socialize. I had to travel overseas right at the start of the pandemic to help my mother take care of my sick father, so I assume I was too tired to join (I tell that story in my piece Happiness is My New Year's Resolution).

Uncanny Fortune
Money makes the world go round. It's the greedy truth we all know and the lower class hates it. You can try as hard as you can, but it takes years just to climb up from one class to the other. I'm one of the many in the lower class that tries. I'm 24 years old, living in Baltimore, trying harder and harder every year to have enough to get out of the lower class but living is way too expensive in this world. I haven't gone to college, I have no certifications, just a high school diploma. I'm working a dead end job, making only $600 bi-weekly. And things aren't getting any easier from there, only getting worse. I'm trying to pay off medical bills and credit card bills all while having to pay $900 at the end of each month for my apartment's lease. But I have a roommate so paying the lease isn't too bad.

Eat the Damn Pasta
I know you. You probably have your cute matching gym clothes on. You’ve probably saved a workout to do by one of your favorite fitness influencers on Instagram. You might have even stretched, foam rolled, drank your pre workout… but you probably won’t go to the gym. Why? You tell yourself that you’re too tired and your left ankle hurts and you have a headache and you make all the excuses but the real truth is that you just don’t want to have to KEEP doing it. You don’t want to have to start holding yourself accountable because hey, this is comfy right? You are doing fine for now, right? So let’s just relax on the couch and maybe try again next week.

I just need to …
I have always been an advocate for continuous learning, setting goals, having ambitions and working hard to accomplish my dreams, as we all should have dreams to work towards, no matter how big or small. However, over the last few years I have been more receptive to asking, why? What need in me am I trying to fulfil and is this just a temporary fix before moving on to something new to curb my need?

It's OK to Face-Plant!
Have you ever had a dream or vision so big it consumed your thoughts for hours, days, months and often years? Then, seeing a window of opportunity, you lunge for that dream… arms outstretched in total freefall, only to fall flat on your face.

If You Only Learn One Thing in 2021, Learn How to Say No
In the past week, how many things have you done that you didn’t want to, just because someone asked you to? I’m not talking about your boss, although we’ll get back to them in a minute. I’m talking about your friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors. The constant parade of people that seem to hone in on you and you alone when they need something.

7 Small Changes You Need to Make for Your Life in 2021
A couple of days ago, I wrote about my feelings on New Year’s Resolutions in general, and I stand by that. But regardless, I know many of you are looking around for things you may want to do differently in your life. It’s just that time of year. And I’m no different. Arbitrary or not, tomorrow begins a new year, and especially after the one we just lived through, it marks a new beginning. Or at least a chance of one.
