When we think of our lifespan, genetics immediately comes to mind.

If that were the case, I could look towards a bleak future - due to my parent's mortality.

First, my father died of cancer. It will hit 20 years in November 2022.

His cancer was so widespread in his body that when it spiralled into the brain, it eventually took over and killed him within six months.

Dad (nor any of us) knew he had cancer until the lesions in his brain caused seizures.

When I inquired about his cancer, the doctors were unsure where it stemmed from. It was that bad.

Then, mum passed away from pancreatic cancer.

Mum has been dead for almost a year now (it will be a year on the 29th of August).

Her cancer resulted from diabetes.

Mum didn't have the best diet, but she was physically active.

After she was diagnosed with type two diabetes, I put her on a modified fasting diet. As a result, she lost 14kg within a year.

But, cancer was growing in the form of a cyst in her pancreas. It was a long and hard six months, and she eventually passed away.

My life is completely the opposite of my parents.

I have led a healthy lifestyle for over 20 plus years.

Seeing your parents die from cancer can make you much more vigilant regarding food choices, lifestyle and exercise.

It's not a hard choice to be honest. Once you've witnessed the deterrioration of people you care about, and at the mercy of a disease which is more than likely incurable - your life takes on a new persepctive.

To think that these individuals could have made so many different choices in the past which may have given them a completely different outcome. That outcome is living. What could be more important than breathing and being with the people you love so much?

I recommend you make living an abundantly healthy life one of the biggest priorities on your list.

Too many of us are leaving our health to doctors. But, we can take matters into our own hands and surprise even the biggest skeptics!

So, the question is, what can we do daily to increase our longevity?

Should we not bother if our genes lurk within cancer risk?

One study wanted to measure the physical activity of 5,446 women in the US who were 63 and older.

Researchers followed them throughout 2020 to determine mortality.

Participants wore an activity monitor for up to seven days to measure how much time they spent in an active state, how intense the activity was, and how much time was spent sitting down.

Results from this study showed that those women who were conducting high levels of light physical activity & moderate-vigorous activity had a lower risk of death.

Associations of this result were consistent amongst women with different levels of genetic disposition for longevity.

Therefore, this study can prove that even if your genes are against you, being physically active rather than sitting down a lot can extend your lifespan.

Even though your genes may indicate a longer life - it's still important to be as active as possible.

Key take away

From this body of research, I'd like you to take the concept of staying active and do that for life.

Then, combine it with healthy eating, sunshine and good times - and you have a wonderful recipe for a longer lifespan.

I do hope this message encourages you to be active and eat well. It's so highly beneficial and so easy.
