It can be difficult, between work, family and friends, to find time for yourself. You may feel like a bad friend if you don't have time to grab lunch, or you might think you're a bad employee if you don't give work all of your attention, but that's far from the truth. If you take time for yourself, you'll be there better for others in the moments you give them.

  1. It will improve your health. If you continually put others first, your body will find ways to force you to relax. You'll grow tired, both emotionally and physically, and sometimes even get sick. When you're sick, you can't be there for people who need you.
  2. Your relationships will improve. When people in your life see you taking care of yourself, they'll respect you more. Not only will you feel better, but you'll make those around you happier. Your positive energy will be passed on to them and you'll create a healthier environment for everyone.
  3. The only person you can change is yourself.Sometimes it's important to take a step back and examine your motives for helping others. If you're hoping they'll realize they need to change, you're probably wasting your time. Instead, work on changing your thoughts about the situation.
  4. You're more important than your job.If you're constantly giving in to your boss and doing more than your share at work, it may be time to put your foot down. Your boss will never learn to respect you if you don't respect yourself. The next time you're asked to work overtime, it's OK to say no if you can't do it.
  5. The only person you can truly count on is yourself. If you don't make time to relax and do things you enjoy, no one will make sure you do. If you need a break, be your own advocate and leave space in your schedule. Remember, your health and happiness depend on it.
  6. You'll learn who your true friends are.You may always bend over backwards for others, but do they ever do the same for you? One-sided relationships aren't fair to the person doing all the giving. If you're stuck in this situation, try asking the other person for help and see how they react. If they aren't willing to be there for you, it's probably time to put some distance between the two of you.
  7. You'll be in a better mood.Your mood can affect everyone around you. If you're always negative, it will rub off on those around you and make them miserable. Everyone will appreciate being around you if you take time to yourself and work on your mood.

Taking time to yourself every now and then is far from selfish. Not only will it improve your health and mood, but it will also help those around you. The next time you say no when someone asks you for a favor, remember that you'll be a better person because of it.
